After a court hearing held on May 30, Zehra Kurtay was released with a measure of judicial control. She is thus obliged to comply with certain conditions in order not to be eventually returned to prison. These conditions include:

To continue to live in the neighborhood in which the accommodation in which she currently resides is located.

Continue to reside at the address at which she is registered and not change it.

To periodically register at the local police station in the area where she lives until the judicial control order is changed or revoked.

Her comrades from the People's Front consider the court's decision to be unjust and unlawful and demand that the judicial control measure imposed on Zehra Kurtay be lifted.

CALL FOR SOLIDARITY WITH LAWYER GUNAY DAĞ, ON HUNGER STRIKE FOR THE RIGHT TO ASYLUM

POLITICAL ASYLUM IS A RIGHT, IT CANNOT BE TAKEN AWAY!

PEOPLE’S LAWYER GÜNAY DAĞ’S DEMANDS MUST BE ACCEPTED,
HIS RIGHT TO ASYLUM MUST BE RESTORED!

THE REVOCATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION STATUS (RIGHT TO ASYLUM) OF THE TURKISH DISSIDENT LAWYER GÜNAY DAĞ IS A CLEAR VIOLATION OF INTERNATIONAL LAW AND THIS DECISION MUST BE IMMEDIATELY REVOKED.

Günay Dağ, a dissident lawyer and member of the People’s Law Bıreau and the Progressive Lawyers Association, came to Greece in 2020 and applied for asylum due to political pressures he faced in Turkey as a result of his professional activities, the politically motivated cases filed against him, and the unlawful prison sentences imposed on him. His application was accepted in 2022, and he was granted international protection status. However, for three years he was not issued a residence card (IDC) or passport, thus violating his right to residence and travel. During this period, legal and extralegal harassment and surveillance by Turkish authorities against Günay Dağ continued. These acts of harassment and surveillance, carried out in cooperation with Greek authorities, especially the Greek intelligence agency, resulted in new criminal investigations being launched against him in Turkey. He was added to the so-called “wanted terrorists list” and a monetary reward was placed on his head.

Due to this arbitrary and unlawful situation, Günay Dağ began a sit-in protest on 27th January 2025, in front of the Athens office of the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum, demanding his right to residence and a passport. While this protest was ongoing, he was informed on 28th April 2025, that his asylum status had been cancelled and his international protection status revoked. The justification given for this decision was the claim that Günay Dağ “poses a threat to national security.” This claim, for which no concrete justification was provided and which was said to be based solely on a “classified document” dated 27th February 2025, stems from the cooperation between the fascist regime in Turkey and the Greek state regarding the political persecution of Günay Dağ. In other words, the revocation of Günay Dağ’s political asylum status is a political decision and is unlawful. Therefore, this decision clearly violates international legal agreements that safeguard the right to asylum, most notably the 1951 Geneva Refugee Convention and the 1967 Protocol, as well as the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

Furthermore, if the international protection status of Turkish dissident lawyer Günay Dağ is revoked, his liberty will be unlawfully restricted and he will face the risk of deportation to Turkey, prolonged imprisonment, and torture. (Nine of his colleagues, who were tried alongside him, have been imprisoned since 2017 due to their professional activities, and were sentenced to long prison terms in a political trial that violated their right to a fair trial.)

We, the undersigned rights defenders, call upon the relevant Greek authorities to take the necessary steps to immediately revoke this decision, which constitutes a clear violation of international law, and to protect Günay Dağ’s refugee status, taking into account the risks he faces and the fact that there are no criminal proceedings against him in Greece.

Zehra Kurtay, a member of People's Front, and veteran from the Great Death Fast Resistance(2000-2007) who has been living in France since mid 2000s, was arrested in Creteil(a suburb of Paris), and is now facing deportation from France and extradition to Turkey.

In February 2024, she shared that her relatives who live in Turkey, have been threatened by the agents of the political police and the Turkish intelligence agency - MIT to make the "cooperate". The agents said to her brothers, that she can return to Turkey, if she accept to become police informant, and thus she would be pardoned of all charges against her.

In mid 2010s Zehra Kurtay was held captive in a prison in France, after a wave of mass arrests against members of People's Front-Turkey have took place in the country at the time. During the period of her captivity, Kurtay's health has severely deteriorated, as she was already in bad condition due to the Wernike-Korsakoff syndrome, from which she has been suffering since 2001, after a forced medical intervention was carried out against her, while she has been on a hunger strike in a F-type prison in Turkey. Only after month and years long struggle the French government released her from captivity.

People' Front is now calling for an urgent international solidarity with Zehra Kurtay, to prevent her deportation from France and extradition to Turkey.

52nd anniversary of the martyrdom of İbrahim Kaypakkaya

Who is Ibrahim Kaypakkaya?

İbrahim Kaypakkaya (1949 – May 18, 1973) was a major leader of the Communist movement in Turkey. He was the founder of the Communist Party of Turkey/Marxist-Leninist (TKP/ML).

Following the military memorandum of 1971, the Turkish government cracked down on the Communist movement in Turkey and was successful in destroying the machinery of the TKP/ML. Kaypakkaya and several of his comrades were arrested. Kaypakkaya martyred in prison in 1973 after being tortured for over 4 months and later being shot in the head by his interrogators.

He is revered by his admirers today as a symbol of resistance, who describe him as an aggregator of the ideas and traits of other major leaders and thinkers in Marxism-Leninism-Maoism.

Ibrahim Kaypakkaya was born in 1949. He was first exposed to revolutionary ideas when he was a student in the Physics department of Istanbul University’s Faculty of Science. He joined in the foundation of the Çapa Idea Club (Turkish: Çapa Fikir Kulubü) in March 1968 and became the president of the club. He was expelled from the university in November 1968 for preparing a leaflet against the visiting 6th Fleet of the U.S. Navy.

Kaypakkaya, who adopted the view of National Democratic Revolution, worked for the newspaper İşçi Köylü („Worker-Peasant“). He wrote articles in the magazines Aydınlık („Enlightenment“) and TÜRKSOLU („Turkish Left“; not to be confused with the modern magazine Türksolu). Kaypakkaya then split from Doğu Perinçek and his group, as he considered Perinçek to be a revisionist and an opportunist. Kaypakkaya, who participated in the struggle of peasantry, formed TİKKO (Turkish: Türkiye İşci ve Köylü Kurtuluş Ordusu, „Workers‘ and Peasants‘ Liberation Army“), the armed wing of his Communist Party of Turkey/Marxist-Leninist, and carried out activities in the cities of Tunceli, Malatya, and Antep.

Kaypakkaya and his comrades interrogated and shot the informer village headman who caused the killing of THKO (Turkish: Türkiye Halk Kurtuluş Ordusu; „People’s Liberation Army of Turkey“) members Sinan Cemgil and his two other comrades by the state forces during a gunfight. Kaypakkaya became a symbol of revolutionary solidarity and camaraderie to his supporters at the time of martial law.

On 24 January 1973, Kaypakkaya and his comrades were attacked by Turkish military forces in the mountains of Tunceli. He was wounded badly, while his comrade Ali Haydar Yıldız died. The military left Kaypakkaya for dead, allowing him to avoid capture. During that winter, severe weather conditions and snow forced him to take shelter in a cave for five days. Thereafter, he left for a village where he asked for assistance from a local teacher. Initially, the man allowed Kaypakkaya to take shelter in a room but then locked the door and reported him to the military.

iboThe military officers tortured Kaypakkaya under custody in Diyarbakır Prison, infamous for its brutal treatment of inmates, for 4 months. In one instance, he was tortured for two weeks after which he was forced to walk barefoot over 50 km snow and icy rivers from city to city. On 18 May 1973, he was tortured to the brink of death and then shot and killed by military officers at the age of 24. His co**se was mutilated and cut up.

The National Intelligence Organization (Turkish: Milli İstihbarat Teşkilatı, MİT) reported that Kaypakkaya was the most dangerous revolutionary in Turkey and one of the most wanted due to his organizational ability that allowed him to almost single-handedly bring Communist ideas to Turkey.

Dear readers, while this article is 30 years old, and written after the celebration on the 50th anniversary of the 9th May, the day of the declaration of Victory against fascism, is exposing hypocrisy among then "world leaders" who condemn fascism while supporting regimes that commit similar atrocities. The article is relevant even today, in our world and times, and shows, that actually nothing have much changed since then. It emphasizes the role of communists and the Soviet Union in resisting fascism and argues that the true dignitaries of this victory are the oppressed peoples of the world, not their oppressors.

We are the sole alternative of this system

What is essential in capitalism? Profit, money. What is essential in socialism? The satisfaction of needs of the people. There’s no intention as making profit or gaining money. That’s why the poor population of third world countries is destitute of everything, lags behind everything. Those, whom have money, can study, they can make music, do not have to feel cold in winter, can eat organic food. Those, who do not have money, can neither see a doctor or heat their houses, nor can they make sport or healthy diet. But this is everyone’s right. Everyone has the right to live a joyful and peaceful life. Happiness and the satisfaction of basic needs can’t be dependent from money of a person. For, we believe in that, we take action to solve the problems of the people. We can’t wait for that until revolution, the problems have to be solved there and then. Because people are confronted with them in this very moment. Capitalism leaves our poor population without alternatives on every level. It shows it’s own methods and it‘s own exploitation system as it’s the only way forward. Because production isn’t made according to the needs of the people, but for profit, almost everything is much more expensive as it should be and can only be affordable for those, who have money. Therefore, people are deprived of many innovations and developments. It deems the population worthy of unhealthy nourishment. As much capitalism is a system based on the POWERLESSNESS of the people, socialism is based on the POWERFULLNESS of the people. The powerful people are, the powerful is socialism. As sophisticated as people are, as much as they are equipped with scientistic knowledge and self confidence, as invincible is socialism. One of the objectives of socialism is to step up the standard of living and welfare for all people. It aims the development of people at all areas, both economically, culturally, socially and politically. It targets to advance people’s values of quality and admiration. Socialism is not just an issue of hunger and toughness but aims at enrichment and flourishing of the population at all areas.

We do not simply refuse, protest and move over.

We will take power. We will establish our own power. And we’ll build up everything from scratch. We will improve the world, that has been turned upside down. Therefore, we can’t just refuse. The projects we’re putting into practice are concrete alternatives of socialists against capitalism. We’re going to multiply these examples and regulate the life of the people step by step. We’ll start to show these with examples; what kind of country we’ll live in, when we come to power. While continuing the revolutionary struggle most effectively, we already plan our future today.

Let us examine more closely, which steps we’ve started!
