Western Birds

Western Birds Simply the most detailed bird hunting scouting reports published in the World. Period.

The Western Birds page serves as a news site for upland bird hunters in the southern half of California. We also update readers on the status of Western Birds newsletter print and e-mail editions. We also have information on Jim Matthews' Signature Calls, hand-made quail calls made from native shrubs and hardwoods.

The Arizona outlook for today's opener (Friday, Oct. 17) is worse than California's -- especially for Mearn's quail.

For you traveling birds hunters. (And isn’t it interesting how other state wildlife agencies have actual data. Not California.)

Trans-Pecos Scaled Quail Counts Above the 15-Year Mean and Holding Steady for a Third Year.

The average number of scaled quail seen per route was 20.06 compared to 20.12 last year. This was above the 15-year mean of 18.39. Public hunting opportunities can be found at the Black Gap and Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management Areas (WMA). We expect Black Gap and Elephant Mountain to provide average to above average opportunities even given limited early season production. Additional hunting opportunities are available through our Annual Public Hunting Permit.

Here's an opportunity to get the Western Birds newsletter featuring 50 years of intense research, scouting, and discussions with the best bird scientists in the region to help your bird hunting in Southern California (and neighboring areas in Nevada and Arizona). Published since 1996, Western Birds has maps, GPS coordinates, and detailed written information on our best public land bird hunting areas in this region in each issue. This special offer will save you some money on a subscription and get you three back issues of your choice to help you find more birds this fall. Think about what a tank of gasoline costs to fill your rig? Or how much you spend on a few warm up clay target sessions at a sporting clays range before the season? For about the price of either of those things, we can help you find more birds this fall so you can focus on areas with more birds. Just call 909-887-3444 or text 909-553-0408 with your e-mail and I'll get you this special subscription offer right over to you -- along with the complete back issue list of Western Birds since 1996. You can also just e-mail [email protected].
