This week’s FACE OUT on our blog features the book Between Two Rivers: Ancient Mesopotamia and the Birth of History by Moudhy Al-Rashid w.norton

“Al-Rashid dives into the actual historical records left by the peoples who lived, loved, and died in the valley between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, providing us with delightful snaphots of daily life circa 1900 BCE. Folks had collicky babies, needed recipes for beer, and wanted to exorcise ghosts. Preschoolers had terrible handwriting. There was inequality among social classes. Moms were juggling too many things with too few hands. Life was, well, life. Recommended.”

–A Good Book, Sumner, WA

Last week’s Thursday Theme for bestsellers was: Well, that’s just silly!

A new-to-the-list picture book that makes us giggle inspired this week’s theme. Try to say these three silly titles without smiling. Whether you smile or not, you should probably just keep reading these because it’s fun to play with language.

Last week, during Portland Book Week, booksellers, authors, illustrators, and publishing folk from around the country gathered in Portland for the American Booksellers Association Children’s Institute, an annual education conference held in different cities around the country. Some attendees were able to do organized bus tours of a select itinerary of independent bookstores, and author and illustrator N. D. Stevenson, the creator of Nimona, was a speaker.

Find this book at Powell’s and other independent bookstores. (This version- The 10th anniversary limited edition with deluxe edges and bonus content- is only while supplies last! The standard edition is also available.)

On our blog:

KUOW, Seattle’s NPR station, reported on Tuesday that the trade books section of University Book Store in Seattle’s U District will soon be taken over by Barnes & Noble.

From the KUOW article: “ A spokesperson for the University Book Store confirmed the news Tuesday, but said it’s not going anywhere. Rather, the store, which has been around since 1900, will continue to independently run all operations except for the trade books department.

Trade books” is a publishing industry term that refers to books intended for general readership (i.e. not academic or specialized books) and retail distribution.”

According to KUOW, a formal announcement is being planned by the two stores next week.

Read the full article as well as our tribute to the long history of that we published for its 120th anniversary in January 2020.

You can explore more University Book Store content by following the University Book Store tag on our NW Booklovers site. The store has been a beloved fixture in the independent bookstore world.
