Starting 2025 off right: MaineDOT selects operator for the state-owned Rockland Branch!

Out of service since mid-2024, the 56-mile corridor will now be operated by Maine Switching Services, who anticipates to run freight and excursion service on this scenic Midcoast Maine corridor.

This is more than just a huge win for Maine’s rail infrastructure- it shows that, given the opportunity, railroads will respond to offers to run on state-owned railroad corridors and make use of these critical transportation lifelines.

We hope to see similar stories replicated across all of Maine’s railroad corridors!

While Maine Switching Services plans to resume freight service and scenic excursions along the line, the company has not proposed operating the long-envisioned Amtrak extension between Brunswick and Rockland.

Eastport Terminal has been screaming for rail service to be brought back to make transportation of paper and pulp products more efficient and cost effective. Restore rail service to the area and those heavy trucks will stop tearing up our roads.

MaineDOT will host a presentation followed by a question-and-answer period to discuss the ongoing efforts of the Calais Branch Rail Use Advisory Council (Council). The purpose of the Council is to facilitate discussion, gather information, and provide advice to the MaineDOT Commissioner regarding future use of the state-owned rail corridor. The corridor council process was established (23 MRSA §75) by the Maine State Legislature in 2021. The meeting will give the public an opportunity to provide input to the Council regarding the future use of the Calais Branch railroad from Pembroke to Calais. We are particularly interested in learning local and regional views and identifying concerns and issues.
