The 2009 Azimut Yachts 105, Amanecer, underwent a full transformation in 2015 when approximately $5 million was spent on a refit, addressing every aspect of the yacht with a complete overhaul of all interior and exterior spaces as well as substantial upgrades to the ship’s machinery such as stabilization, shafts, props, watermakers, all HVAC air handlers, LED lighting and audio/video equipment. It’s offered for sale by MarineMax Yachts for $4.499 million.

Yes, it’s a great thing to have a big boat that’s fully outfitted for fishing. The fighting chair in the cockpit. The nearby air-conditioned mezzanine seating. Crew standing at the ready with every kind of bait and lure imaginable.

But then, there are those times—and yes, we all have experienced them—when the urge hits to take a break from all the hullabaloo that comes with fishing from the big boat. Sometimes, an angler wants to be alone with his wits, his gear and his prey.

From a report titled “Pathways to Propulsion Decarbonization for the Recreational Marine Industry”, which was commissioned by the International Council of Marine Industry Associations, recreational boats account for less than one-tenth of 1 percent of global greenhouse-gas emissions; however, it is clearly an industry that is deeply invested in helping to preserve the natural resources it depends upon. To that end, the stakeholders have joined to search for ways to further reduce the negative impacts of conventional fossil fuels as we collectively look to the future.

Lürssen has launched the 114.2-meter Project Cosmos, marking a milestone as the German shipyard’s first superyacht to feature fuel-cell technology. Built to coincide with Lürssen’s 150th anniversary, the vessel—also known as Project 13759—was designed inside and out by Marc Newson for a visionary owner who sought to push boundaries in both style and sustainability.

A highlight of Cosmos is the glass-domed private owner’s study, complete with a sky terrace. Lürssen engineered a custom process to bend thick glass without imperfections, delivering unobstructed 360-degree views. Additional standout spaces include a glass observation deck beneath the foredeck helipad and an open aft deck with a pool, whirlpool bath and dry dock for the yacht’s largest tender.

We saw calm seas and light winds off Palm Beach, Florida, so we were able to wring out the big Viking’s top end. At 2,456 rpm, the boat hit 45 knots with ease. It also carved turns with aplomb and backed down rapidly in any direction, at a clip much faster than most anglers can wind the reel.

In fact, the 74 will be part of the builder’s factory demonstrator fishing team for this summer and beyond, so expect to see it at tournaments along the East Coast and in Bermuda.

Back at the dock for a full walk-through, my first impression of the teak-topped cockpit was its size: 216 square feet of fish-fighting room for a team of anglers to spread out. Two full-length in-deck fish boxes are to port and starboard, with a centerline hatch for easy access to the optional Seakeeper gyrostabilizer. The transom has a fish box that can also be used as a livewell to keep a full day’s supply of bait ready to go. The unlimited-class Release Marine fighting chair can be swapped out for a multirod rocket launcher when the day calls for lighter tackle.

The 180-foot Yachts called Moskito typically spends summer days in the Mediterranean, perhaps at anchor with all of the water toys out. Come late afternoon, the anchor is weighed in time for an evening cruise with dinner on the upper deck aft. Charter guests see the moon, the stars and twinkling lights ashore as a warm breeze keeps everyone comfortable.

In the Caribbean, Moskito’s crew particularly enjoys being in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, especially the crystal-clear waters and reefs of Canouan and the neighboring Tobago Cays. These shoal waters are fantastic for scuba diving and snorkeling, and a visit to the turtle sanctuary is a highlight. A great end to the day is a barbecue with music from a steel-drum band, either on a beach or on board.

There’s much to celebrate in Nova Scotia, known as “Canada’s Festival Province.” With 8,300 miles of coastline, rich culture and history, a fantastic food scene and a packed festival calendar, Nova Scotia rewards cruisers who take time to explore this Canadian Maritimes gem on the Atlantic.

The capital of Nova Scotia is as much of a draw for its historic sites as for its sophisticated dining scene and laid-back vibe. The star-shaped Halifax Citadel National Historic Site has dominated the city’s skyline since 1856. From May through October, tour this hilltop fortress with guides in period dress. Time your visit for the firing of the Noon Gun.

Downhill from the Citadel lies the 16-acre Halifax Public Gardens. One of the oldest formal Victorian gardens in North America, it’s a peaceful and colorful respite in the city center.

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic chronicles the region’s captivating maritime history, including such headline events as Titanic’s sinking and the devastating 1917 Halifax Harbor explosion.

Naturally, world-class seafood abounds in Halifax. Look for fresh offerings on Saturdays at the Halifax Seaport Farmers Market. The Bicycle Thief puts an Italian spin on its dishes dal mare. The Highwayman Restaurant & Bar pairs seafood-focused Spanish dishes with outstanding cocktails. The Wooden Monkey specializes in inventive, locally sourced fare and local craft beers. And sample a local specialty at the King of Donair: a sandwich version of a döner kebab.

Choose your own adventure to explore the natural beauty of Cape Breton Island. Cruise Bras d’Or Lake, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, to cast a line or look for bald eagles, herons and other wildlife. Drive the 186-mile Cabot Trail scenic highway through the dense forests of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Stop to stroll the Bog Trail to spy tiny pitcher plants and gigantic moose. Or drive a golf ball on the highly regarded Cabot Cliffs and Cabot Links golf courses and enjoy the dramatic ocean views.

Fuel up for explorations at the Dancing Goat Cafe & Bakery, a popular destination for breakfast, lunch or coffee. Visit the casual Rusty Anchor for its renowned lobster rolls. For fine dining, Woodroad offers a distinctive, intimate multicourse dinner. And make time to catch a performance of Cape Breton’s world-renowned fiddle music at the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre or The Barn.

Along the south shore, Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse is the most famous of the province’s 160 lighthouses and an emblem of Nova Scotia. Many of the colorful wooden homes of Old Town Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage site, date to the early days of this well-preserved British Colonial settlement, founded in 1753.

The 2018 Princess Yachts 75 Motor Yacht Amarula Sun is a combination of beauty and luxury, ready for new ownership. It’s located in Anna Maria, Florida, and listed by Galati Yacht Sales for $3.749 million.

The yacht has very low hours, only 395 hours on its MAN engines. In addition to extended trips to the Gulf, southern Florida and the Bahamas, the owners would frequently enjoy Amarula Sun on anchor, in and around the barrier islands along the Gulf Coast and often within just six miles of their home. The vessel has been professionally-maintained, captain- and owner-operated, and upgraded to support extended range cruising and anchoring.

These two new concepts raised eyebrows when they were released by designers George Lucian and Hannah Hombergen. Some feel they represent the not-so-distant future of yachting, while others believe it's too far, too fast.

What are your thoughts?
