New Midding single ‘All For You’ out now and nice one to 6Music for jumping on it so quickly, first Huw premiering in the day (‘All For Huw’?) and then the New Music Fix crew following suit later in the evening. Ryan Davis & the Roadhouse Band - New Threats From the Soul - number 6 in Uncut’s Album of 2025. Hugely deserved accolade for one of the best guys/bands/collective of friends in the game. Keep ‘em coming //

“Neither I nor any of my bandmates ever made a single decision based on a trend that we thought might be able to get us on a bigger stage at South By Southwest. We’ve only ever followed our own North Star and [stayed] true to our own vision. And now, for whatever reason [...] we’ve somehow circumnavigated the whole sh*tshow!”

Preach brother, preach! Fantastic five-page Ryan Davis and the Roadhouse Band feature in this month’s Uncut. Pick up a copy to read the whole feature and support long-form journalism and the artists it champions. //

Out today, the 20 year anniversary compilation featuring 11 otherwise unavailable/unheard/newborn baby fresh tracks from 11 acts from across the Tough Love roster. That means you get new music from the likes of Cindy, April Magazine, Index For Working Musik, The Reds, Pinks & Purples, Daily Toll, Empty Country (physical only!)++ , all in one place and all in the spirit of mutual understanding and appreciation.

What links all these artists other than the desperately preserved vision of one incredibly stubborn person hanging on for dear life? If it’s not one signature sound (and it’s not), then it’s at least a determination to continue facing one’s own way whether the world turns to face you or not. Let there always be these kind of songs. Much thanks to all the artists involved and Matthew Walkerdine for the artwork & design. // .toll

Out today, Daily Toll’s ‘Begin Again’, the final song to be taken from Tough Love 20th anniversary compilation, Don’t Do Anything Important With Anybody Else, ahead of its release out 10th October. It follows the release of Cindy’s ‘The Thousand First’ and Index For Working Musik’s ‘Going To Heaven On The End of A String’. A deeply personal song, the band’s singer/songwriter Kata Komlos explains the emotional position from which the song first arose - it feels like the perfect way to close the record:

“’Begin Again’ starts at the end; written in Budapest as a poem amidst the two month turmoil of losing my dad unexpectedly. Grief is a nonsensical strange entangled beast or as promising as peering over a precipice and choosing to begin again and again” - Kata Komlos (Daily Toll)

Tough Love 20: Don’t Do Anything Important With Anybody Else is released on 10th October on limited edition LP (250 black, 250 blue) and on all digital platforms. A reminder, also, that it’s Bandcamp Friday, so if you wish to pre-order, then today would be the day. // .toll

“A song in protest of Gravity. In solidarity with the salmon leaping against the current“ - Index For Working Musik

After so long it becomes harder to say new things about older things you now just do. Some things you’ve become. Some things you simply (never simply) are. The thing becomes a slippery notion. The self slides along with it. After this long, the story is whatever are the songs.

Here are 11 new ones, from the current constellation, and a future still to come. The cement is still wet on that one.

From the forest near where I now live you can hear a chorus of different birds in voice at once, competing but each defined, in defence of a territory or to attract a mate. There’s an app that tells you so. I wonder, too, what that app doesn’t reveal, if their nature need not share those same purposes. This is simply (never simply) how it exists. If we can’t speak to the mysteries of these strategies, they at least persist, regardless of who picks up the frequency. Singing to itself, and there will always be these kinds of songs.

Self-portrait at two decades.

Out today on vinyl for the first time, April Magazine’s Sunday Music For An Overpass, a nine track collection originally issued on cassette in vanishingly small number by Paisley Shirt in 2021. The kind of mythical recording you might have once needed to know the band to own. Alas, no longer... A modern classic in my eyes, which nods to the greats of dream-laced indie pop but holds its own kind of hard-to-place mystery. One of the very best // .more.butts
