Meta's recent policy changes on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp explicitly permit users to label LGBTI+ individuals as "mentally ill" or "abnormal" based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, effectively endorsing anti-LGBTI+ hate speech.
These updates dismantle protections against harmful stereotypes and align with broader corporate shifts toward far-right political interests. Advocacy groups condemn Meta for fostering unsafe platforms that normalise dehumanising rhetoric, with LGBTI+ journalists and users now abandoning these services.
Given this systemic embrace of hate speech, I'm closing my Meta accounts and transitioning to decentralised platforms like Pixelfed and the Fediverse.
