AVHATAKALI NETSHISAULU'S LIFE CELEBRATION

BOOK: 'Avhatakali Afrika Is Fifty!
Compilers: Mathatha Tsedu, and Dzudzanani Mulovhedzi-Netshisaulu

PUBLISHER: Vhakololo Press

DATE: 3 June 2024

Avhatakali Netshisaulu was born on June 03, 1975. He grew up into a bubbly, intelligent, witty and focused individual. He was a goal driven young man, and in whatever he did, whether it was running the long distance races, his academic work, or his businesses, he excelled.

When he was brutally taken away from us, the pain was immense. It was a pain shared by a shocked nation that rallied to assist and comfort us. What pained us even more was that in losing him, we also lost, at a public level, who he really was.

He became the posterboy of victims of crime, of greed, and a symbol of the reverse GBV. We agonised for years about how we could reclaim him back to who he really was. This book is an attempt to paint a picture of who Avhatakali really was. I t is a story of his life told by a myriad of people who came into contact with him from Day One of his life.

It is the closest aggregation of his character as a human being and it embodies our attempt to reclaim him back from victim to a life that had its own character and vibrancy.

– Mathatha Tsedu and Dzudzanani Mulovhedzi Netshisaulu

LITERARY NEWS
15 October 2024

We at Vhakololo Press are celebrating the shortlist announcement of our three authors in the South African Literary Awards 2024.

To us, as the Press, it means a great deal, and it's a cause for merriment already, that at least three of our writers gained entry into this year's SALAs.

'Village griot' and veteran writer Vonani Bila has been shortlisted for the Literary Translator's Award for his translation titled 'Khanimamba N'wantlhadyana na Mbila'.

First-time author Rudzani Eric Mmbengwa's poetry collection, 'Ngwedzamilambo' earned him shortlist status for the Poetry Award.

Prolific author Thivhusiwi G Tshindane Tshivhula, who won the Novel Award last year, has been shortlisted for the same award this year with his novel titled 'U Gidima Hu Fhirwa Nga U Gidima'.

Tshifhiwa Given Mukwevho edited both 'U Gidima Hu Fhirwa Nga U Gidima' and 'Ngwedzamilambo'.

"As Vhakololo Press, we are getting somewhere," said an elated Mukwevho. "I spend nights and Saturdays and Sundays at the office working harder, making sure that I contribute towards building SA literature and the promotion of our African languages. If anything else, the good news is for all us at Vhakololo Press."

SALAs award winners will be announced during an award ceremony on 7 November, at the Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History in Pretoria.

LITERARY NEWS, community-building
12 October 2024

We at Vhakololo Press are delighted to share the good news that we, in partnership with our author Rahab Moneatse, have adopted the SOUTPAN loveLife Y-centre in Bochum in the Blouberg Municipality.

This means that we will facilitate creative writing program on a pragmatic level to the youths of the centre and also continue to donate reading materials at least twice a year. The books will not be necessarily be those published by Vhakololo Press, but also books of the youths' choice that Vhakololo Press can purchase from any bookshops across the country.

At the end of the first round of creative writing program an anthology comprising literary pieces across genres will be developed and published. Writings will come from the youths themselves, and course their caretakers at the centre.

On 11 October 2024, our team visited the centre and donated at least 100 units of a variety of literature titles. Vhakololo Press' author, Rahab Moneatse, who linked us with the centre, was also there.

SOUTPAN loveLife Y-centre' Program Coordinator Masoga Phuti welcomed us with warm arms and ensured us that this kind of youth-building relationship between the Press and the centre will go far.

Literary News:

We would like to thank the University of Limpopo for hosting Vhakololo Press during their inaugural University of Limpopo's Book Festival held on 14 September 2024 at the University.

More thanks to sister Makgatla Thepa-Lephale who joined us at our stall and manned it, selling more books. Makgatla is so passionate about literature, the promotion of reading and buying books. She heads a reading and literacy initiative, Ponelopele Reading Club and Library.

To all those who bought books from Vhakololo Press' stall, we give thanks.

We further thank and appreciate the National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC) and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture for supporting the publication of some of our books.

Be blessed and have a productive week ahead.
