Do you remember that between November and December, our partners I giardini di Pomona and Udruga Permakultura Dalmacija carried out the cross-border fig exchange activity?

🌎 𝟱 𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗴 𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗮, while 𝟱 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗴 𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝘂𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗮, Italy. This initiative aims to introduce new biodiversity into both regions, fostering long-term collaboration and sustainable agricultural practices.

𝗡𝗼𝘄 that the fig trees have been planted, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀: 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 in these geographical diverse environments. But how will this be done?
The 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺, detailed in the newly published Joint assessment report, will track key parameters, including:
✅ Growth and development (height, trunk diameter, canopy expansion)
✅ Health indicators (leaf color, stress signs, disease presence)
✅ Environmental conditions (soil quality, temperature, humidity, biodiversity interactions)

📊 The collected data will help understand the impact of different environmental factors on the saplings, supporting future sustainable agricultural strategies. The monitoring will continue even beyond the project's end to ensure long-term insights and benefits.

🌱 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 I giardini di Pomona 𝗮𝗻𝗱 Udruga Permakultura Dalmacija 🌱

The five Italian fig varieties selected by I Giardini di Pomona for the exchange and transplant activity have arrived safely and in perfect condition in Dalmatia, where Permakultura Dalmacija has initiated the transplant phase in Croatian soil 🪵

Meanwhile, the five Croatian fig varieties chosen by Permakultura Dalmacjia for transplanting in Puglia have successfully reached their destination at I Giardini di Pomona 🪚

✨ Important days are ahead as the involved partners will closely monitor the behavior of the transplanted varieties, analyzing and evaluating their response to a new climate and soil different from their native environment.

With its distinctive elliptical shape and known by various nicknames such as 𝘓𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘩𝘦𝘵, 𝘋𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘢, 𝘚𝘢𝘯 𝘗𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳, and 𝘚𝘢𝘯 𝘗𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘰, the fig variety that concludes our adventure at I giardini di Pomona is 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗱𝗶 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗮 🌱

This is one of the most prized ancient fig varieties from Northern Italy 🇮🇹, carefully cultivated at I giardini di Pomona and primarily found in the regions of Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, and Lombardy 📍

This variety is among the sweetest 🍬, making it ideal for drying, compotes, or jams, as well as being featured in many traditional recipes from Northern Italy.

Also known as the “Striped fig” or by its local name “𝘈𝘭𝘭’𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭’𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵,” the 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼 fig variety is undoubtedly one of the rarest and most beautiful figs still found in the natural landscape of Salento, Puglia 📍

🇪🇺 I giardini di Pomona Interreg Italy-Croatia Programme

One of the hardiest and most cold-resistant varieties of Ficus carica, 𝗗𝗮𝘂𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲, also known as 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘂𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲, is among the 600 fig varieties carefully preserved at I giardini di Pomona in their natural gardens 🌱. As a 𝘣𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘢 variety, it produces two harvests: the first in July-August and a second in September-October. Its fruits feature a violet-colored skin, pink interior, and are juicy and sweet.

I giardini di Pomona are advancing the 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝟭𝟮𝟱 𝗳𝗶𝗴 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, selected from the over 600 preserved and protected varieties in their collection. The goal is to provide detailed scientific information for each variety, making them more accessible and supporting their conservation 🌱

But what does this work look like in practice? As shown in the photos, each plant is being equipped with a waterproof tag featuring a QR code that links directly to its corresponding profile on the website of I giardini di Pomona. While strolling through the gardens, visitors can scan the QR codes and instantly access detailed information about the plants 📲

🤝 This initiative bridges technological innovation with the preservation of agricultural heritage, ensuring that tradition meets modernity in the service of biodiversity conservation 🌱

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗔 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘁 📍

A few weeks ago, 𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟰𝘁𝗵, the final conference of the VERA project took place in Split. This significant event, organized by Udruga za prirodu, okoliš i održivi razvoj Sunce, was conceived as an opportunity to showcase the achieved results, share experiences, and foster new collaborations for the protection of agricultural biodiversity. The conference emphasized the importance of sustainable agricultural practices and raising awareness through joint educational activities.

𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁: I giardini di Pomona presented their initiative to digitize Puglia’s fig collection, a crucial step in preserving the genetic heritage of this essential fruit; Città di Larino shared insights from the Croatian partners' study visit to Italy, while Udruga za prirodu, okoliš i održivi razvoj Sunce presented the outcomes of the Italian partners' study visit to Croatia, highlighting the importance of cross-border exchange of best practices. Additionally, workshops and lectures organized by Udruga Permakultura Dalmacija and educational programs for elementary schools developed by Sunce were showcased.

The conference also featured a 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝘄𝗮𝗽 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿, where participants exchanged gardening tools, seeds, plants, and books.

The event concluded with 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, and a visit to Croatia’s only school botanical garden, located at Ostrog Elementary School in Kaštel Lukšić.

Originally from Western Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean, the 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗼 is a remarkable and ancient variety of Ficus carica, widely regarded as one of the finest medium-to-late ripening figs. Historical accounts suggest it may date back to the time of Carthage's destruction, emphasizing its deep-rooted heritage.

As a 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗮 variety, it rarely produces 𝘧𝘪𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪: it yields main crop figs (𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪) around
mid-September, with the harvest potentially extending throughout October. The fruits are high-sized, with an almost absent stalk. Its skin is a deep black-violet color, featuring light cracks when fully ripe. The pulp is juicy and extremely sweet, making it highly appealing.

𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲! 🤗

Today our walk takes us to uncover another precious fig variety carefully preserved at I giardini di Pomona: 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗖𝗔 ✨

🍃 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆: Moraceae
🍃 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘂𝘀: Ficus
🍃 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀: Ficus carica

Originally from Puglia and widely cultivated in the Brindisi and Taranto areas, 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮 is a beloved fig variety not only among locals but also across other parts of southern Italy. This 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗮 variety produces its fruits, the 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶, which ripen in early September—just in time to be enjoyed!

🍽️ With its tangy yet aromatic flavor, Verdesca offers a 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. Its red, firm pulp is encased in a particularly thick skin, delivering an intense flavor and high juiciness with natural sweetness, making it an excellent choice for drying.
