📍 Porto Piri Piri — Kilmarnock Road, Shawlands

Tried a couple of things from Porto Piri Piri and, to be fair, there are some combinations on this menu that I genuinely haven’t seen many other places doing.

🔥 The Spicy Tot Box was probably one of the most interesting. You get Piri Piri chicken chunks with crispy tater tots, melted mozzarella, spicy mayo and your choice of sauce. It’s basically proper comfort food in a box — soft, cheesy, saucy, with the texture from the tots and plenty of flavour from the chicken.

Chicken, cheese and tater tots sounds simple, but it works really well together, and it’s not the usual loaded fries that you see everywhere else. Definitely something a bit different.

🍚 I also tried the Porto Gold Rice Box. This comes with flame-grilled chicken thigh coated in their sweet and smoky honey-garlic Porto Gold sauce, served over fragrant rice with roasted sweet potato, corn salsa, pickled red onion and crispy onions.

This one was really tasty. The sauce has that sweet, sticky flavour with a little smokiness and garlic running through it, then you’ve got the rice soaking everything up and the different toppings giving it a bit of freshness and texture. Again, it feels like they’ve actually tried to create something different rather than just doing another standard chicken-and-rice box.

The flavours across both boxes were very good and the portions offer good value for money too.

My only bit of constructive criticism was the Piri Piri chicken itself — some of the edges were a touch burnt and I felt it had maybe been left on the grill slightly too long. Nothing major, but taking it off a wee bit earlier would have made it even better.

Apart from that, there’s a lot to like here.

✅ Big flavours
✅ Good portions
✅ Good value for money
✅ Plenty of proper comfort-food options

If you like your food saucy, cheesy, soft, loaded and full of flavour, Porto Piri Piri is definitely worth a look. Especially if you’re bored of seeing the exact same loaded fries and chicken boxes everywhere.

Thoughts on second marriages and getting the first wife’s permission?

Stopped by Phil’s Glasgow down at the waterfront and worked my way through some of their seasonal specials. ☕️🍒

This is exactly the type of place I like seeing do well — a young local couple building their own business, trying something different and putting real effort into the drinks they’re serving.

I tried a few from the specials menu:

🍒 Cherry Iced Matcha Latte — probably the one that surprised me most. You get that earthy, slightly grassy flavour you want from matcha, but the cherry adds a nice fruity sweetness and a little sharpness that cuts through the creaminess. Really refreshing and very easy to drink.

🎃 Pumpkin Spice Latte — proper autumn drink. Warm, sweet and comforting, with those cinnamon-style spice notes coming through without completely overpowering the coffee. Creamy, smooth and exactly what you want when the weather starts turning.

🍁 Oat Shaken Maple Espresso — this one had a really nice balance. You still get the stronger roasted espresso flavour coming through, then the maple gives it that caramelised sweetness and the oat milk softens everything off. Sweet, but still tastes like coffee rather than just syrup.

🍫 Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate — rich and chocolatey, but the saltiness stops the caramel becoming overly sweet. Very smooth, almost dessert-like, and definitely one for the colder days.

Genuinely enjoyed all four. What I liked most was that each one actually tasted different — they’ve not just taken the same base drink and thrown another syrup into it.

Always good to see young people taking a chance on their own business, especially locally, so places like this deserve a bit of support.
