"I love the process of taking pictures and being able to capture the moment and eternalize it for others to see. When we did our interview with Oregon State track coach Louie Quintana, I was able to experience the journalism side of photography which was very new for me."

The High School Journalism Institute is for forming relationships and trying new things.

"In just four days, my mind has been flooded with so much valuable information; things I could have never learned on my own. I try to grip onto every last piece of it. Hearing stories from real life journalists has filled me with a feeling that I could actually do the one thing I’ve wanted to do for so long."

Wherever our careers and academics take us, I hope that we all make the change we wish to see, I hope each and every one of us reaches the goals we long for.

"As the days went on, it seemed like the people around me knew each other their entire lives. ... I’ve learned tons."

We may be a little socially awkward at first but overall we’re a caring group.

"When signing up for the High School Journalism Institute I was expecting an air conditioned office building and long lectures on how to become a better journalist. To my surprise, I would be putting on a harness to participate in a rope challenge course at least 30 feet off the ground."

On day one of the High School Journalism Institute I was inducted into the "ladder club."

Cindy Grimm and other members of the Oregon State University robotics department traveled to Jefferson on a July morning to look at blueberries — research that one day could help them build robots that can gently prune the bushes without damaging the fragile fruit.

While a lot of that work is computer science and math, some of the delicate movements are inspired by Grimm’s decades in martial arts.

The research could one day help them build robots that can gently prune the bushes without damaging the fragile fruit.

Our HSJI students have been hard at work reporting in the field for their big news stories. They also attended a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion seminar led by The Oregonian's Cata Gaitán. They led the students through questions about what the definition of modern journalism is and pushed the kids to consider what it takes to be a Watchdog in a community. Some students are finishing up their reporting with their mentors today and others have moved on to outlining and beginning on their stories.
