The message of the world is clear: “Love yourself first.” Yet the Word of God firmly warns us against such thinking. Scripture says: “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves…” (2 Timothy 3:1–2, KJV). Loving ourselves above all else is not a virtue—it is a sign of the last days, a mark of selfishness and pride that pulls us away from God.
Jesus does not call us to exalt ourselves, but to surrender. He said: “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23, KJV). To deny ourselves is to put Christ above our desires, our pride, and our will. It is the very opposite of the world’s call to self-love.
When asked about the greatest commandment, Jesus did not say, “Love yourself.” Instead He declared: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” (Matthew 22:37–39, KJV). Our love must first be directed to God, and then to others—not to self.
True joy, worth, and peace are not found in turning inward to self, but in turning upward to Christ. Denying ourselves allows His love to rule in us and flow through us.
Self-love puts ‘me’ first. Jesus calls us to put Him first.
