On a stage lined with this year’s PleinAir Salon Art Competition from PleinAir Magazine finalists, Kyle Ma was running numbers in his mind as he listened to each name called for the final winners: “I had three paintings in the running for the awards, and all day I was trying to do the math — what chance did I have to win the grand prize? During the whole Opening Ceremony, the anticipation was killing me.”e whole Opening Ceremony, the anticipation was killing me.”

We had the pleasure of catching up with Kyle in between the demonstrations and paint outs at the Plein Air Convention (PACE) in Reno, Nevada, where the PleinAir Salon awards were announced in high anticipation.

Recently, Eric Rhoads, Publisher led his annual Publisher’s Invitational art retreat in the Adirondacks of New York. Many artists who attend come year after year because of the friendships that are made, the ease of painting together in beautiful locations, and the convenience of it being all-inclusive.

Susan Nicholas Gephart is one such artist. “This is my ninth year attending in memory of my artist father Tom Nicholas,” she said. “It’s a place for me to paint just what I want and remember that he was always my constant encourager throughout my life as an artist. It was a beautiful day and the whole group went down to … a gorgeous place with paths and circling the marsh and lake. Something for everyone.”
