“But not only would that risk university censure—implying an encouragement to my students—it would require me to make myself open to their questions. And then to speak of s*x work’s—yes—abasement, drudgery, though more the latter than the former, the
abasement being the usual kind of the independent contractor.” —Han Ong, “The Past,” Summer 2025
The meet-cutes are ignominious, and the past is on the installment plan in Ong’s piercing tale of a family of Roger Federer acolytes coming together and falling apart, which joins contributions from Jim Shepard, Thomas Pierce, and Sasha Graybosch, and design by Elsa Hansen Oldham that’s reorganizing our histories in more riveting couplings.

“What he glimpsed to the west through the smoke was something he would have called impossible: giant pillars of roiling black venting fire at their crowns, hundreds of feet in the air, and throwing burning material forward, and a whirlwind rushing at them on the updraft that was tearing trees entirely out of the ground.” —Jim Shepard, “The Devil’s Broom,” Summer 2025
Shepard leads us into the nightmarish heart of a rapacious forest fire—the Big Burn of 1910—which consumed more than 3 million acres of the Inland Northwest and claimed nearly 100 lives. Other contributors to this stellar edition include Han Ong, Thomas Pierce, and Sasha Graybosch, with design by Elsa Hansen Oldham that’s setting our feelings aflame. “I saw a real cat at school once, brought in by a zookeeper for an educational demonstration. We all stood around its cage, cooing and tossing it treats until it threw up. The zookeeper told us this was normal. He fed it a tranquilizer, and we took turns touching the fur on its back. I wanted to compare the memory of that cat’s fur with the actuality of Real-Feel’s, but Mom warned me not to get close or even speak to it, as my attention might interfere with its affinity for Dale, which she’d configured according to the instructions, though it could be swayed.” —Sasha Graybosch, “In Nature,” Summer 2025
Family dynamics and battery-operated pets take center stage in Graybosch’s wry and touching tale, which joins new stories from , , and and eye-popping art from guest designer in the Summer 2025 edition. Snag a copy now, if you haven’t already—quantities are limited, and they’re going fast! Link in bio.

Fun fact: Elsa Hansen Oldham (Summer 2025) and Will Oldham (Spring 2007) are the second married couple to have each guest-designed an issue of the magazine. The other members of this exclusive club: Lou Reed (Winter 08/09) and Laurie Anderson (Winter 2002). ❤️ Posted • in a marvelous coinciding with her big solo show opening September 4th in Miami at , my wife has provided the design elements for the new volume of new works and old are featured. my mind is blown by the work represented in the magazine and especially by experiencing the work in person. it’s worth a trip to the glorious conflicted space that is our southeasternmost state. if you can’t make it, get a copy of All Story. elsa is on fire, and it’s wildly evident in the new body of work, which is nothing short of a fantastic merging of the human with the elemental.
