Meet Athiak Dau Riak, a 19-year-old girl from South Sudan 🇸🇸, who is considered the most expensive bride in the country. Standing at an impressive 7 feet tall, she has been the center of a viral story for over two years.
Two men from different communities in South Sudan requested her hand in marriage. The first suitor offered 105 cows 🐄 and 65 million South Sudanese pounds ($20,000).
The second suitor was rumored to have raised the bride price as high as 350 cows 🐄, along with additional gifts such as a Toyota V6 and a standalone four-bedroom house for Athiak’s family.
In the Dinka culture, marriage transcends mere courtship and beauty. It hinges on character, family background, and a clean slate. Once these criteria are met, families initiate discussions, and if the girl is deemed attractive, multiple suitors may emerge, leading to competitive negotiations.
