review of Strange Ports Press Turcios' THE VAMPIRE in the new issue of DEAD RECKONINGS, #34 (Fall, 2023) - along with my translation of Printemps' WHIMSICAL TALES for Snuggly!

"The Vampire is possibly the only example of Honduran Decadent writing in print in English. This alone makes these publications valuable additions to our store of knowledge about the literature of the past."

"The short novel The Vampire (El Vampiro) has a very different tone. Written by Froylan Turcios, a noted Honduran author and influential journalist, it is a fresh addition to the canon of Decadent literature. The protagonist and his love interest live an emotionally overheated, claustrophobic life, isolating themselves in a shared life of the mind. They are dragged to social events, where they only want to discuss art and aesthetics with each other. With a dark family secret and a classically Gothic sinister priest in the background, it is inevitable that real trouble will befall these dreamy idealists.

Many aspects of their story could be placed in a classically Gothic European manor, but while young Rogerio and his beloved cousin Luz are enamored of continental literary works, especially the Germans (along with the American Edgar Allan Poe, of course), their story takes place in the aristocratic society of Guatemala, transporting the tropes of Romanticism to a new setting."
