The Science Snippet of the programme last Thursday night (Sept 11) was about brevetoxin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brevetoxin), a family of chemicals made by some aquatic microbes, most notably Karenia brevis. Brevetoxin is thought to be responsible for massive fish kills in algal blooms, and occasional human health problems.

The Science Snippet of the programme last night (Thurs Sept 4) was about methenamine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methenamine), also known as hexamine, and sold under various brand names usually as a urinary tract antiseptic for the prevention of urinary tract infections. Methenamine works by breaking down into formaldehyde, which happens only in acidic environments, like urine.

The Science Snippet of the programme last Thursday night (Aug 28) was about potatoes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potato). Potatoes were originally native to southern Peru, but are now grown very widely around the world and are an important staple food. Parts of the potato plant that are exposed to light produce the toxin solanine - which is not green, but green colouration is an indication of exposure to light.

The Science Snippet of the programme last Thursday night was about Linux (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux), a family of open-source operating systems from which other widely-used operating systems are also derived e.g. Android & ChromeOS. Linux is also the predominant operating system on the world's servers, and is used in all of the top 500 supercomputers.
