FFFoxy Podcast #263 is now available. On this episode, we dig into the work of the Minneapolis-based record label, Tern and Crow. After being in bands and releasing music for over a decade, primarily in his instrumental experimental rock duo Falcon Arrow, Matt Reints decided to start up Tern and Crow in 2020 as a means to help some of the artists and bands he admired release their music on a physical format. In its five years of operation, Tern and Crow have put out fifteen releases that cover different styles of rock, pop, and folk music, but are bound by a certain distinctive sense of experimentation and heaviness. Their latest release is a label compilation called Tern and Crow: 5 Years of Whatever, featuring previously unreleased music from the currently active bands on the label’s roster.

This past week, I had a chance to speak with Matt, and we discussed the motivations behind starting Tern & Crow, the significance of physical media in fostering connections, the exciting activity happening within the current Twin Cities music scene, the details surrounding the latest compilation release, the origins and evolution of Falcon Arrow, and much more. You’ll hear that interview in three different segments throughout the show, along with track selections from all of the releases from the Tern and Crow catalog to date. Hope you enjoy!

FFFoxy Podcast #262 is now available. On this episode, we dig into the work of the Minneapolis-based record label, Bumpy. Started in 2018 by Adam Werven, Bumpy has served as an outlet for Werven’s various musical projects, most notably for his work under the alias Larry Wish, and has branched out to include material from other artists in the Twin Cities underground music scene and beyond. The focus of the label has leaned towards various strains of oddball pop and rock, but some of the more recent Bumpy releases have gotten into other areas of minimalism and experimental music.

This past week, I had a chance to speak with Adam, and we discussed the beginnings of Larry Wish, the significance of live performance, the making of his most recent album “The Mind is the Builder”, the motivation for starting Bumpy, and the different inspirations that keep him moving forward with the label and his music. You’ll hear that interview in three different segments throughout the show, along with track selections from several of the releases from the Bumpy catalog. Hope you enjoy this episode.

FFFoxy Podcast #260 is now available and airing tonight on KMSU at 11:00. On this episode, I dig into the work of the Oakland-based label, Dandy Boy Records. Started by Bobby Martinez initially as an outlet for his own bands’ music, Dandy Boy began to expand its scope and pick up momentum in the wake of the COVID lockdown period with Martinez releasing a lot of the exciting music his friends mostly in the Bay Area were making. This year alone, Dandy Boy will be issuing over a dozen different titles – from 7” singles to full-length LPs – that showcase different takes on hook-filled indie pop and rock music. I had a chance to speak with Martinez this past week and we discussed the beginnings of Dandy Boy, the Oakland music scene, the role of DIY labels, the releases coming out on the label this year, the bands that he is involved in, and much more. You’ll hear that interview in three different segments throughout the show, and you’ll also hear tracks from numerous releases from the Dandy Boy catalog, including a bunch of new and forthcoming stuff. Hope you enjoy!
