30 solar streetlights installed in HEC-hit villages in Udalguri, Baksa, Tamulpur dists

Guwahati, Oct 7: As solar street lights have proved a suitable tool for mitigation of human elephant conflict (HEC) in affected areas, premier biodiversity conservation organisation Aaranyak (www.aaranyak.org) has installed 30 more such solar street lights across 21 HEC-affected villages in Assam’s Udalguri, Baksa and Tamulpur districts.

These solar lights were installed with support from the SBI Foundation involving the local community members recently with the objective to reduce the risks of human-elephant face-offs after dusk in HEC affected areas.

As these solar streetlight illuminates identified vulnerable HEC-hotspots after the sunset, presence of wild elephants in these spots could be spotted by villagers from a safe distance and that prevents unwarranted interactions between villagers and elephants as both the species could navigate suitably in the shared space for their respective safety.

“The solar lights are strategically placed where the locations were identified involving local communities and members from Elephant Conservation Network (ECN), helping both communities and elephants to avoid accidents and distress,” said Dr Alolika Sinha, a senior biologist in Aaranyak

Aaranyak's team comprising Anjan Baruah, Rabiya Daimari, Mondeep Basumatari, Abhijit Saikia, Bikash Tossa, Jaugashar Basumatary, and Pradip Barman with participation from Elephant Conservation Network (ECN) members and local communities completed the task of installing all these 30 solar streetlights.

N.F. Railway adopts modern signalling systems
To further enhance safety of train operations and augment sectional capacity

Maligaon, Sept 18:

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has adopted a significant capacity enhancement project through the implementation of the Automatic Block Signalling System (ABS) and Intermediate Block Signalling System (IBS) across several critical sections of its railway network. There are three key sections benefiting from these development works. They are Old Malda- New Jalpaiguri, New Jalpaiguri- Guwahati & Kumedpur-Katihar- Mukuria. This strategic initiative is aimed at improving operational efficiency, safety, and overall capacity of the zone, as part of an upgradation &modernization plan to cater to the increasing demand for rail services in the region.

The Old Malda – New Jalpaiguri stretch via Barsoi and Aluabari covers 231 Route Kilometre (RKM). The ABS system has been implemented at a cost of Rs 371 crores. in this section which will improve the train-handling capacity of this vital route. In this stretch, ABS has been commissioned in stretch of 66 RKM. Similarly, the New Jalpaiguri – Guwahati section via New Coochbehar & Rangiya, spanning over a stretch of 407 RKM along with Kumedpur – Katihar – Mukuria stretch covering 64 RKM, has also been sanctioned for ABS implementation with a project cost of Rs. 568 crores. In total, 702 RKM of railway track will benefit from the ABS system, enhancing both safety and efficiency over the zone.

For the current FY 2024-25, NFR has set a target of completing 102 RKM of ABS works on the Old Malda – Barsoi – Aluabari – New Jalpaiguri section, and 56 RKM of work on the New Jalpaiguri – New Coochbehar- Rangiya- Guwahati section. Tenders for the remaining sections have already been awarded or are in the process of being finalized, with a considerable amount of work already underway.

NFR has also successfully commissioned 03 Intermediate Block Signalling Systems (IBS) across Alipurduar- Raja Bhat Khawa section & Bagrakot – Sivok section under Alipurduar division along with Azara- Kamakhya section under Rangiya division. With this a total of 07 IBS has been installed till July, 2024 over NFR. IBS plays a critical role in enhancing train operations by dividing long sections of railway into smaller blocks, allowing more trains to run simultaneously with improved safety and efficiency. This system reduces delays, increases line capacity, and enhances the overall reliability of train operations, ensuring smoother and faster transportation for passenger and freight trains.

These infrastructure upgrades are expected to significantly enhance the sectional capacity of the railway network, allowing NFR to manage higher train frequencies with improved safety. The implementation of both the ABS and Kavach systems will reduce the headway between trains, improve punctuality, and provide greater reliability for both passenger and freight services. These advancements will not only improve connectivity in the Northeast but also boost economic activities in the region by facilitating more efficient rail transport.

NFR ready for the Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 Campaign
To focus on remarkable improvement in cleanliness

Maligaon, Sept 14:

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials are ready to proudly participate in the nationwide “Swachhata Hi Seva 2024” campaign, a movement focused on promoting cleanliness and environmental sustainability.

This initiative, which runs from 14th September to 2nd October, marks the 10th anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission and culminates on Swachh Bharat Diwas, i.e. on 2nd October as a tribute to the Father of the Nation. The theme for this year, “Swabhav Swachhata - Sanskaar Swachhata” seeks to emphasize the role of individual responsibility and collective action in maintaining cleanliness across the country. The theme is revolutionized by its three pillars identified as Swachhata Ki Bhaagidari, Sampoorna Swachhata & Swachhata Laksh*t Ekayi (CTU Units) and lastly Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivir.
In line with the objectives of Indian Railways (IR), NFR has planned a comprehensive schedule of activities to ensure active participation and a measurable improvement in cleanliness across its zones. Kickstarting with a Swachhata Pledge at its headquarter, these activities include an extensive cleanliness drive at all its offices & institutional buildings, railway stations under its jurisdiction, trains, railway colonies and surrounding areas, with special attention on prominently used important locations. Additionally, the campaign is focused towards maintaining clean railway platforms, tracks, toilets, and drainage systems within station premises as well as Pay & Use toilets, waiting rooms, and other railway facilities, which otherwise is a routine nature of NFR.
One of the key highlights of NFR’s contribution towards this campaign will be the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, a massive plantation drive organised at Maligaon, aimed at enhancing environmental consciousness alongside cleanliness. Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs) have been identified with events scheduled at railway premises to take place during the campaign period. Public awareness programs, such as Prabhat Pheris, Nukkad Nataks, and workshops involving schools and NGOs, will further enhance citizen participation in these efforts.
Additionally, NFR is actively supporting the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR) initiative by setting up RRR centers for collecting and processing waste materials, promoting the responsible disposal and recycling of goods. There will also be efforts to encourage the sale of recycled products, demonstrating the railway’s commitment to a circular economy and waste reduction. To ensure a comprehensive approach, the Swachh Food Initiative will also be emphasized, focusing on maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in food preparation and distribution across railway platforms and trains.
The Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 campaign presents an opportunity for all citizens, partners, and stakeholders to actively participate and make Swachhata a way of life. NFR encourages all passengers, employees, and local communities to actively participate in this campaign, in a 'Whole of Society Approach' with emphasis on people's participation making 'sanitation everyone's business'.
