As Vika struggles to stay in communication with her family in Ukraine’s war zone, her friends (fellow twenty-something immigrants from Eastern Europe) hang out, skateboard, smoke and swap opinions on the uncertainty of their future in Canada.

Drifting between camcorder-shot skate videos and beautiful 16mm cinematography, Troika is an assured work of hybrid fiction. Co-directed by Robert Mentov and Karl Kai, the film captures its subjects, ostensibly playing versions of themselves, in a state of limbo within Canada.

Those of you who came to the last screening will recognize Mentov’s work as DOP for Noel Pendawa’s film A Day Apart on the Seventeenth, so I’m super excited to be screening this film.
