"irrational: catching myself buying tickets to yet another production of outrage
theatre even though while i was occupied at last week’s performance the sidewalk
melted into the ocean so when i left the matinee & blinked against the surge of
daylight i discovered i was now stranded on an island of one surrounded by a
bale of sea turtles dragging plastic nooses."

Being born in Rome, Italy, and living in a city that is imbued with arts and culture makes me very sensitive to the topic. The monuments that surround me have been standing for millenia and are a testament of the creativity of mankind.

"I only photograph other photographers,
I study their studies of unsuspecting subjects,
their choice of lenses protruding in ecstasy
against the will of the clouds that gather.
Some days I am lucky to catch their brazen chase,
stabbing the shallow lakes with their tripod legs
as they hunt into the water with meticulous urgency
for a composition over storm struck branches, drifting."

in the poem “Bounce lighting” by Brian Duran-Fuentes, in MasticadoresUsa

"On the first day of summer we turn into ladybugs
and take over the abandoned silos along the river.
At night we watch confused men hit one another
with drainpipes. Antlers grow from their wounds."

One more excerpt for now from the new Review of Juliet Cook's newest poetry chapbook, "Blue Stingers Instead of Wings" (Pure Sleeze Press)! 🖤

"These are almost poems within poems, circling concentrically. Take, for instance, ‘Severed Into Unspeakable Compliance’ which details the historic act of lobotomising female patients in mental institutions in order to pacify them. In the poem, these institutionalised women, r***d by the staff who were supposed to protect them, are lobotomised to stop them complaining and accusing. Images that circle through Cook’s own neurological condition, the words that failed to flow, sited bodily as blood that pours forth from gaping mouths, and choking goose feathers stuffed in the throat. Here, “mental stupor is better/than mental disorder” because a tranquil woman does not defy. She obeys. Her youth is her use as a s*x object. But circle back to ‘The age of Vicissitude’ where youth ripens to maturity and Cook reveals the invisibility hex of middle age, of being bound and hidden from view."

"The poems in Blue Stingers Instead of Wings are not the confessional poetry of Sexton or Plath. Cook’s confessions are horrific contortions, the blood and s**t and metamorphosis of otherness, of disturbed mind over decaying matter. Here, imagined fears, like decapitation by ceiling fan, and disrupted brain flow imagery are scattered throughout, alongside the very real issues of misogyny and beauty, and the invisibility that comes with feminine maturation."

"It helps if your heart is shattered and you feel guilty that it isn’t your fault this time either.

It helps to sink into a frigid bath of pity and self-loathing, gasping F**k quietly in a shaky voice no one will ever hear.

It helps to have a broken mirror nearby, one with the backing cardboard showing through, lightning-shaped shards glinting in the sink like so many sins."

The Dogs Were Good (Again) As if they had a choice, chained to the backyard fence, whimpering in the freeze like the weaklings you said they’d be. I threw some dry ham bones and snouted one, remembering to laugh as you’d said to. None of them ever barked, which made me wonder what good they ...

"When the shape of a man is cut from blue construction paper
is the paper form more human or the void left behind?

Tracing the interior of the head — meaning
the void’s head — tells us much of the cut;

it’s smooth, & painless, & if they weren’t blue
nobody would see the sparse fibrous strands

recalling the departed phantom..."
