When faced with a decision, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

Do we wonder and worry about what people may think and say, or do we consider what God will think and what He has said?

Are we doing what we think will bring us profit or pleasure, or what will honor and please our Savior?

So many times, our choices are not based on the principles and precepts of the Word of God, but on our fear of others and desire to please them.

When we base our decisions on social acceptance rather than on scriptural authority, we are sure to err.

This is true in every area of our lives - big and small. Where we go, what we say (or refuse to say), how we dress, what we listen to, who our friends are…the list could go on and on, but each choice matters.

The chief criteria for every Christian in every choice should be glorifying and pleasing the Lord (I Cor. 10:31).

What a difference it would make in our homes, our churches, and our world, if we would base every decision on pleasing Christ - not pleasing ourselves, not pleasing others, just pleasing Him.

“That I may please You, who gave Your life for me,
That I may please You, a faithful soldier be.
Make this my one desire, the aim that I pursue,
In everything I think, and say, and do,
That I may please You.”

“The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭29:25‬

“And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.”
‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭15:24‬

“For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world...”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭4:10‬a

“Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭3:13‬

I Cor. 6:20; Rom. 15:6; Ps. 19:14

DON’T FLATTER YOURSELF

The Bible warns us often of the danger of flattery. We know that a flatterer spreads a net for our feet (Pro. 29:5), and leads us to ruin (Pro. 26:28), but have you ever considered that we can flatter ourselves with the same results?

I was recently reading Psalm 36, and this verse caught my attention, “For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful.”

Matthew Henry said,

“He flattereth himself in his own eyes; that is, while he goes on in sin, he thinks he does wisely and well for himself, and either does not see or will not own the evil and danger of his wicked practices.

He calls evil good and good evil.

His licentiousness he pretends to be but his just liberty.

His fraud passes for his prudence and policy.

And his persecuting the people of God, he suggests to himself, is a piece of necessary justice.

If his own conscience threaten him for what he does, he says, ‘God will not require it; I shall have peace though I go on.’

Note: Sinners are self-destroyers by being self-flatterers.

Satan could not deceive them if they did not deceive themselves. But will the cheat last always? No; the day is coming when the sinner will be undeceived, when his iniquity shall be found to be hateful. “

There are many ways that we deceive ourselves, and thinking too highly of ourselves is one of them.

“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.” (Rom. 12‬:‭3‬)

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” (‭‭Jas.‬ ‭1‬:‭22‬)

May the Lord help us to be honest and humble, and not to fall for flattery, even from ourselves.

“Any of us have the potential to become a scorner.

Scorners are not just children or teenagers.
Often, they are angry, bitter adults.

They are unsubmitted wives and unspiritual husbands.

They are disgruntled church members and discouraged pastor’s wives.

They can be found in a myriad of other forms and faces.

The common thread among scorners is a willingness to ridicule others to avoid personal reproof or rebuke. It is a willingness to shame others to avoid being ashamed of oneself. It is a willingness to harden our hearts rather than humble them, to become calloused to the hurts we inflict on others to the point that we delight in laughing at their pain.

If you are tempted to become this person, please, do not. If you have been a sympathizer or a source of approval for this type of person, stop.”

Can you imagine this scene?

A lost traveler is in a hot desert. She is parched, nearing exhaustion. She looks up and sees a beautiful oasis shimmering in the distance.

She summons her strength, hurries across the hot sand, drops to her knees to quench her thirst…and gets a mouthful of sand. You can almost feel her anguish and despair.

She was chasing a mirage, an illusion. In the distance, it appeared to be just the thing that she most needed and desired, but it wasn’t based in reality. It was deceptive, and the end was bitter disappointment, perhaps even death.

Tragically, many people spend their lives chasing a spiritual mirage. They believe that all the shimmery things this world offers will somehow quench the thirst in their soul. In the distance, the illusion may appear to be worth pursuing, but the end always results in disappointment and death.

Satan, the god of this world, is a master deceiver. He is an expert illusionist.

The mirage of this world makes that which God says is ugly appear attractive.

It makes that which God says is evil appear good.

It makes that which God says is dangerous appear safe.

It makes that which God says is forbidden appear acceptable.

Satan gets us to focus on the temporal instead of the eternal, to pursue the physical instead of the spiritual, and to trust our subjective opinions and emotions instead of the settled truth of God’s Word.

So, how can we keep from chasing this mirage?

1. Believe God’s Word. Believe it more than how you feel, what you think, or even what you see. It is the Rock beneath the swirling sands. It is the water of life, the spring that never runs dry. Cling to it.

2. Focus on the spiritual and eternal, not just the physical and temporal.

3. Walk in the Spirit, not the flesh.

4. Live by God’s principles, not your perceptions. Live by faith, not by sight.

The Word of God reveals reality, and removes all illusions about God, ourselves, and this world. Follow it with all your heart.

Don’t spend your life chasing a mirage.

(II Cor. 4:3-6, 18; 5:7; Ps. 73; Pro. 3:5-7; II Cor. 11:13-15)

“A wise son heareth his father's instruction: But a scorner heareth not rebuke.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭13‬:‭1‬

“Scorners refuse to hear rebuke, correction, or counsel.

Scornful people have decided that they are the final authority in their lives, and anyone who challenges or contradicts them becomes the object of their disrespect and ridicule.

Scorners are the ultimate rebels.”

Faith waits expectantly in the darkness,
and walks obediently in the light.

“(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5:7‬ ‭

“My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭62:5-8‬ ‭

“But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:25-28‬ ‭

“I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭27:13-14‬

"I just don't have what it takes!"

Have you ever felt that way, especially when it comes to serving God?

"I just don't have what it takes…

…to be a godly wife.

…to be a spiritual mom.

…to be a pastor's wife.

…to be a teacher.

…to be a soulwinner.

to....." (you fill in the blank)

I have thought these things over and over. I remember many years ago when my husband and I were just a few days away from our wedding, I almost backed out! It wasn't because I didn't love him, or think he was the right one for me. No, it was primarily because I was afraid that I didn't have what it would take to be his wife, and more specifically, to become a pastor's wife. We both knew that's what God had called him to be, but I was pretty sure I was not up to the job. Thankfully, Brian reminded me that God had brought us together and that God would give us the grace to do whatever it was He had for us to do.

Almost 29 years later, I can testify that he was right. I can also testify that, in a sense, I was right as well. I don't have what it takes!

In myself, there is no way I can be any of the things God desires me to be. I can't be the wife, mom, daughter, friend, teacher, musician.....and a host of other "roles" my life involves. This world tries to teach us to be "self-sufficient", to tell us we we are “enough”. Guess what? I fail myself (and others). The truth is that only through the Lord am I able to find any sufficiency.

I often find that thought coming back, "I don't have what it takes!" Thankfully, I am also reminded that while I certainly don't have what it takes, I have the Lord, and He has what it takes. If I will lean on Him, look to Him, and follow Him, He will supply all that I need. The same is true for you.

If we have the Lord, He is sufficient.

"Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;" (II Cor. 3:5)

"And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me." (II Cor. 12:9)
