Hey hey Giovanni here. I hope you’re enjoying our late fall weather. It’s really looking like a more favorable wet weather pattern is taking shape for the rest of the year and possibly into January. La Niña is peaking and expected to ease up over the next few weeks, but due to the latent nature of weather, impacts will be slow to recover. This winter is still expected to be drier than average, but rain and snow won’t stay away for too long.

As many of you have already noticed. I’m no longer posting weather updates due to my pending move out of the area in January.

For personal reasons this is my only choice.
Thank you for all your support and kind words over the years. I had an amazing 20 years in Nevada County, but my time here has run out. Stay safe and healthy and remember to support your local small business community. They need you now more than ever.

This is not the end. It’s a new beginning 😄.

Farewell... and thank you.

SLIGHTLY COOLER! 63°F Hey hey Giovanni here! Our unseasonably warm and dry October will continue today as High pressure dominates our weather. Today's daytime highs will reach into the low 80s with overnight lows in the mid 50s.

Change is in the air as a cold front drops south along the Sierra crest and Nevada late this week, bringing us cooler weather and a slight chance of showers to our northeast. There may even be snow showers along the Sierra crest above 8500ft, but only a dusting. No rain for us again. Just a big drop in our daily highs as we struggle to make it into the low 70s by the weekend.

The long range forecast sill looks very dry as October is well on its way of being one of the warmest driest we've ever seen. I wish I had better news. With a moderate to strong La Niña winter ramping up, it's already looking like a dry fall is with us and a drier than average winter looks likely.

Today -
*Sunny and dry
*Daytime highs in the low 80s.
*Lows in the mid 50s.

Truckee....................................73°F - 30°F
GV/NC ......................................84°F - 56°F
Penn Valley/LOP.......................85°F - 58°F

Wednesday - Monday
*Sunny but cooler each day through the week.
*A slight chance of Sierra showers and snow above 8500ft this weekend.
*Daytime highs to range in the low 80s to low 70s by the weekend.
*Slightly warmer next week and dry.
*Lows in the mid to low 50s.

*Statewide Sierra Snow Pack - Current Observations: XX% of the Sierra range is covered in an average of XX" of snow. XX% of normal for this date.

WARMING UP! 64°F 7:30AM. Hey hey Giovanni here with another quick update. Sorry my updates have been brief and infrequent lately. Photography work in the days of the Rona is either feast or famine and life in Nevada County is becoming exceptionally unaffordable as the lockdown months continue. Want to help? Recommend my services:

Our weather however waits for no one and keeps on going. The current forecast looks good as we continue to warm up as unseasonably strong High pressure strengthens offshore. Unfortunately this weather pattern has the potential of producing strong north PSPS inducing winds. Currently only a small section of Nevada County looks to be be impacted by the projected PSPS starting tonight as the dreaded north winds develop.

Check the PG&E website to see if your home will be affected. https://pgealerts.alerts.pge.com/updates/

Winds are expected to subside Friday as High pressure settles over us and Low pressure pushes east reducing the pressure gradient. It’s going to get hot again this weekend. Expect daytime in the upper 80s through Sunday with slightly cooler days next week. Still no rain in the forecast. Just more of the same dry weather we’ve been having. With both August and September being the warmest on record. October sure is looking to continue that trend as the only hint of rain is way too far off in the future to even mention at this time.

12/10/2020

WARMER DAYS AHEAD! 60°F 7:30AM. Hey hey Giovanni here with a quick update. I hope you enjoyed that cooler weekend. Sorry to say that another warm up is on the way as High pressure settles in behind that dry front that passed through on Saturday. This means a continuation of anomalous dry weather for the foreseeable future. This atypical weather means many more days of fire weather will be with us through much of October.

Expect daytime highs in the low 80s today, warming up to mid and upper 80s by the weekend. There’s a distinct possibility of a north wind event this week. Keep an eye on those PG&E PSPS maps should Red Flag warnings be posted. Long range models are keeping us dry as strong High pressure offshore remains our dominant weather feature. I’ll keep looking for rain. Just not much to get excited about at this time.

SO MUCH COOLER! 55°F 7:30AM Hey hey Giovanni here! The long awaited cooling trend has arrived. It's going to feel like fall as a storm spins well off the coast losing strength before it moves onshore later this weekend. Expect high clouds and cooler weather. Daytime highs will reach into the low 70s with overnight lows in the low 50s.

Our first fall storm will arrive on Saturday, but moisture looks way limited bringing us only a slight chance of scattered showers at best along the Sierra. Saturday evening looks like our best chance at showers, but it's a slim chance. The biggest change in the weather this weekend will be the much cooler fall weather as highs this Saturday will only reach the upper 60s. Warmer and dry weather returns on Sunday and into the following week as High pressure dominates our weather again.

The long range forecast is looking dry for now, but cooler as the storm track remains just to our north. I hope to have wetter news soon.

COOLER WITH CLOUDS! 65°F Hey hey Giovanni here with a quick update. High clouds are streaming inland as the remnants of Hurricane Marie get pulled up into an approaching trough that now looks like it won’t bring us any rain, only partly cloudy skies. This is not uncommon for early season storms as they weaken as they drop south from the Pacific NW.
The biggest impact from this weather system will be the much cooler temperatures as highs only reach the upper 60s on Saturday with lows in the low 50s. High pressure reasserts itself on Sunday and into next week bringing us warmer clear days. More on that soon.

The long range forecast still looks dry with little chance of rain well into October.

CLOUDS AND COOLER! 66°F 7:30 AM Hey Hey Giovanni here. High pressure is quickly losing strength as the storm track drops south from the Pacific NW. We will see a few high clouds today and cooler weather. Daytime highs will reach into the mid 80s with overnight lows in the low 50s.

The well advertised cooling trend has begun, but our rain chances are slipping as the trough to our north is expected to weaken as it drapes south into NorCal and the subtropical moisture from the south continues to drift west, mostly missing us. There will be a couple of impulses of Low pressure that are expected to pass through our region Friday night and Saturday, but moisture looks limited and we may only see scattered showers and not the steady rain we had hoped for. The biggest change in the weather this weekend will be the much cooler fall weather as highs this Saturday will only reach the upper 60s. Warmer and dry weather returns Sunday and into the following week as High pressure dominates our weather again.

The long range forecast is looking dry for now, but cooler as the storm track remains just to our north. I hope to have wetter news soon.

GETTING COOLER! 67° 7:30AM. Hey hey Giovanni here with a quick update. Clouds are streaming north from the remnants of Hurricane Marie. Cooler weather is on tap with high clouds arriving Wednesday. Our first rain chance of the season looms on the horizon as a cold front develops along a deepening trough on Friday. It’s still too early to know how much rain we’ll see as the bulk of the moisture still looks to mostly impact the central coast. The Sierra above 8000ft may even see a light dusting of snow.

The rain is expected to turn showery by late Saturday and clear out on Sunday with daytime highs in the mid 60s through the weekend. Enjoy the warm fall days while they last.

The long range forecast still looks dry after this weekend and well into October. I’ll have a complete update tomorrow!

05/10/2020

SLIGHTLY COOLER! 68°F 7:30 AM Hey Hey Giovanni here. High pressure will continue to influence our weather but cooler days are on the way. Less smoke haze as the onshore flow begins to influence our weather. Daytime highs reach into the low 90s with overnight lows in the mid to upper 50s.

The well advertised cooling trend has begun. Rain is in the forecast, as the Subtropical remnants of Hurricane Marie drift into a trough that's expected to slide down the coast next weekend. At this time forecast models do show the bulk of the moisture impacting the central coast of California, but still reaching us by Friday evening. Rain amounts do look light and the duration of this first rain event may last well into the weekend as this slow moving system pushes inland. The much cooler fall weather will be a huge relief as highs this weekend only reach the upper 60s.

The long range forecast is looking dry for now. I hope to have wetter news soon.

STILL HOT, BUT COOLER DAYS COMING! 70°F 7:30 AM Hey Hey Giovanni here. High pressure has peaked. But the heat will still be with us today with smoke haze as daytime highs reach into the low 90s with overnight lows in the mid to upper 60s.

Slightly cooler days are expected by Sunday, but substantial cooling won't arrive until next week. Hints of rain are starting to creep into the forecast, but nothing solid at this time as the Subtropical remnants of Hurricane Marie drift into a trough that's expected to slide down the coast next weekend bringing us the first chance of rain this fall. Don't get too excited as these type of forecasts often don't pan out, but it's still exciting to see.

The long range forecast is looking promising for cooler days into mid October, but any real rain chances are still eluding us beyond next weekend. I hope to have wetter news soon.

HOTTER! 92°F 12:30 PM Hey Hey Giovanni here. Hello October! My birthday month! Another hot day as strong High pressure really settles in over us. This dome of strong High pressure will keep our skies hazy and push our daytime highs today into the low 90s with overnight lows in the mid to upper 60s.

Thankfully this ridge of High pressure is expected to shift out of our area this weekend taking with it the hottest temps we've seen in early October for at least 10 yrs. Cooler weather is expected late this weekend, but substantial cooling won't arrive until next week. Still no hints of rain in the short term forecast, but there's something brewing around the 10th of October that may change our weather quite drastically as subtropical moisture has the possibility of streaming north into California briging with it a chance of rain. Forecast models are still flip flopping regarding this possibility so don't expect rain in the posted forecast just yet.

The long range forecast is looking promising for big changes for around the 10th of October or so and then even better chances of rain around the 12th or so of the month. It's still way too soon to get super excited, but at least the global weather patterns are beginning to shift enough to bring us hope.

Today -
*Sunny and hot with haze.
*Daytime highs in the low 90s.
*Lows in the mid 60s.

Truckee....................................81°F - 40°F
GV/NC ......................................94°F - 66°F

*Sunny and hot with some haze.
*Daytime highs in the low 90s.
*Lows in the low to mid 60s.

Sunday - Wednesday
*Cooler each day and sunny
*Daytime highs in the low to mid 80s.
*Lows in the low 60s.

*Statewide Sierra Snow Pack - Current Observations: XX% of the Sierra range is covered in an average of XX" of snow. XX% of normal for this date.
