Riding the Wave of Sustainability at Gerringong Preschool!

Back at Gerringong Preschool for another year of getting creative, learning about sustainability and, of course, having a bit of fun!

This time we swapped out the old boards and brought in some fresh ones ready for a new school year. 🏄‍♂️

The kids got stuck into:
🎨 Creating their own designs with SurfPaints
🏄 Having a go on the balance board
♻️ Learning how old surfboards can be given a second life instead of ending up in landfill.

It’s all about Riding the Wave of Sustainability — showing kids that with a little creativity, the things we might throw away can become something pretty awesome.

No more surfboards in landfill. Every board has a story. 🌊

$5 Paint a Skateboard Workshop

👥 Group size: 20 participants

Join us for a hands-on creative workshop where you’ll design and paint your very own rideable skateboard deck!
Each participant will receive:
    •    A rideable skateboard deck
    •    Two sets of paint pens to take home
    •    Access to stencils, accessories, and a full creative setup
✨This package allows you to complete your design at your own pace, encouraging care, detail, and creativity beyond the workshop.

What an incredible 24 hours at our BYM Rites of Passage 24-Hour Walking Challenge.

A group of Year 10 boys from Kiama High School took on the challenge, walking approximately 50,000 steps over 24 hours. They pushed through the entire night without sleep, encouraging one another every step of the way and proving just how capable they are when they work together.

Along the journey, we had the opportunity to watch the Dragons play, with one of our young fellas receiving the incredible honour of performing the coin toss before the game. After the final siren, we were lucky enough to meet the players, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

As the sun came up, we celebrated with a refreshing rock pool dip before the boys’ parents joined us for the final hour, walking alongside them for a few extra laps to bring the challenge home together.

The greatest achievement wasn’t the 50,000 steps—it was the growth that happened along the way. Over 24 hours, the boys challenged themselves physically and mentally, opened up to one another, built stronger friendships, and discovered they were capable of pushing through discomfort together. These are the moments that make the BYM Rites of Passage program so powerful.

We are incredibly grateful for the support of headspace Kiama–Shellharbour, GPH as the major sponsor of the program, Kiama Rotary Club, The Hill Bar & Kitchen, Kiama High School, KDSC Stronger Community, and the St George Illawarra Dragons for helping create an unforgettable experience for these young men.

Our Paint a Skateboard Workshop, funded by NSW Regional Youth and delivered in partnership with Kiama District Stronger Community, was an incredible success.

With 27 young people taking part, the room was filled with creativity, connection, and plenty of good vibes.

Every participant walked away with:
🛹 A custom-painted skateboard to keep
🎨 Two packs of SurfPaints to continue creating at home

From blank decks to one-of-a-kind artworks, it was amazing to see everyone’s personalities come to life through their designs.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day so special. Creating opportunities for young people to connect, express themselves, and build confidence is exactly what Creative Kooks is all about. 💙

🌊🏆 We’re incredibly proud to share that Salty Sessions has been recognised with the Thriving Together Award at the headspace National Forum.

What started as a simple idea became something so much bigger than we imagined.

Over five weeks, Salty Sessions brought young people and their support networks together through surfing, yoga, creative activities, check-in circles, and plenty of early morning ocean therapy. More importantly, it created a space where people could connect, be themselves, and remind each other that no one has to navigate life alone.

This award belongs to everyone who made the program what it was — every young person who showed up, every volunteer, every facilitator, and every community partner who believed in the vision. Thank you for trusting us and each other.

While the pilot program has wrapped up, this recognition reminds us just how powerful community, connection, and the ocean can be for wellbeing.

This may be the end of the pilot… but it’s definitely not the end of Salty Sessions.

We saved a surfboard from landfill… and gave it a whole new purpose.

At our final Salty Session, this board became something special — a momento piece shaped by the people who were part of the journey. Participants added their thoughts, feelings, and reflections, capturing what the program meant to them and how it impacted their lives.

What was once headed for waste is now a story. A reminder of connection, growth, and showing up for yourself and others.

This is what Creative Kooks is all about — turning the old into something meaningful, and creating space for community to leave their mark.

Rainy days call for creativity ☔🎨

Today we ran a Paint a Skateboard workshop with Shellharbour Council at Blackbutt Community Centre as part of their drop-in session. It turned out to be the perfect spot for young people to duck in out of the rain and get creative.

There were some seriously epic designs, and a few of the artworks have even been selected for Shellharbour Youth Art Week and will be displayed in the gallery at the Shellharbour Civic Centre 🙌
