You can get books like Karen An-hwei Lee's beautifully innovative novel, LOVE CHRONICLES OF THE OCTOPODES, which was recently featured on the podcast DEATH // SENTENCE and where the following observations were made:

LOVE CHRONICLES OF THE OCTOPODES is a "masterfully static book"
&
"Her descriptions of things are spectacularly gorgeous and evocative -- and delicious."
&
"To get back to why it's an ethical imperative to believe in Emily D... This is a new wonderfully strange being in the world."

&

"To be weird to weird fiction is be doubly exiled."

yo cruel month,

Ellipsis Press is limping to recovery after Small Press Distribution's telegraphed-but-rushed thoughtless/criminal black hole collapse. I don't know when you'll be able to order our books -- but technicians are working on the problem. Among others, fellow small press travelers, Adam Robinson of Publishing Genius, Hilary Plum of Rescue Press Rescue Press, and Derek White of Calamari have said recent wise things about small press economics and SPD's collapse.

Speaking of Derek, this week I received in the mail a copy of the latest issue of Sleepingfish, edited by the meticulous and elegant Garielle Lutz and the behind-the-scenes mastermind, Cal A. Mari AKA Derek White. In this 20th anniversary issue, you will find the typically dazzling practitioners of the literary arts that Calamari Press has supported for over 20 years, including Justin Torres, Sawako Nakayasu, John Haskell, Mark Baumer, and yours truly. In this edition, Derek White gives a modest but rare history of Sleepingfish's past 2 decades, in which he has published Brandon Hobson, Ottessa Moshfegh, Joshua Cohen, Staneley Crawford, Diane Williams, Daniel Borzutzky, David Ohle, Norman Lock, and Miranda Mellis -- to name really just a few. (And in just that list there's a Pulitzer winner and a handful of National Book Award finalists, but who cares about prizes.)

Calamari Press is a small press. Its mission and certainly its economics aren't like the commercial presses. Don't support small presses because they need the money. Or do. But support small presses because it's an alternative world. The alternative weirdo presses have to survive without making money; it's a different value system; it's a place where capitalism can crush you but it doesn't rule.

From Paul Kincaid, the esteemed British science fiction critic, comes this astute engagement with Karen An-hwei Lee's LOVE CHRONICLE OF THE OCTOPODES. The review -- perhaps the only time you'll see Lee compared with Isaac Asimov -- appears in Strange Horizons:
http://strangehorizons.com/non-fiction/love-chronicles-of-the-octopodes-by-karen-an-hwei-lee/

"Love Chronicles of the Octopodes is ... a book to be savoured for its extravagant glee in the use of language... As you close the novel you may be no closer to understanding our octopus narrator than Emily is herself, yet the richness of imagery will stay with you."
--Paul Kincaid

This novel's clamour of different registers all coming from the same narrator serves to highlight their own ontological uncertainty.

DONALD BRECKENRIDGE AND FRIENDS CELEBRATE THE RELEASE OF HIS NEW NOVEL: AS IT FALLS
Donald Breckenridge has written five novels including And Then (Black Sparrow Press), edited two fiction anthologies, and introduced the NYRB Classics edition of Henri Duchemin and His Shadows by Emmanuel Bove. He was the fiction editor of the Brooklyn Rail for nineteen years, and co-founded and co-edited InTranslation.

He will be reading from his new novel As It Falls (Ellipsis Press).

Pam Ryder is the author of 2 novels and a short story collection. She’ll read from her new novel, The Lists of Billy the Kid.

Jared Daniel Fagen is the author of The Animal of Existence (Black Square Editions, 2022). His prose poems, essays, and conversations have appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, Fence, Lana Turner, and Asymptote, among other publications. He is the editor and publisher of Black Sun Lit, a PhD candidate in Comparative Literature at the CUNY Graduate Center, and an adjunct lecturer at the City College of New York. Born in Jeollanam-do, South Korea, he lives in Brooklyn and the western Catskills.

MOYNA PAM DICK (aka Gregoire/Mina Pam Dick et al.) is the author, most recently, of I am writing you from afar (BSL, 2021) and Moira of Edges, Moira the Tart (OPR, 2019). Her shifty notations span the genre/gender-spectral, exploring vagabond formal structures, haunted intertexts and the tender urban sublime. Also an artist and philosopher, she lives in New York City.

Douglas Glover's insightful praise of Donald Breckenridge's AS IT FALLS:

"The inter-cutting of stories, the mutual motivation and parallel actions, the witty coincidences, and internal links of image and word pattern are delightful... What Breckenridge has done so brilliantly is to maximize the proliferation of subplots, each one inviting the reader to reflect upon the main story in a different way."

In As It Falls, author Donald Breckenridge re-imagines his biological parents’ meeting in the spring of 1967, while weaving together a battered and wild New York City of 1981, a wild and battered New York City of 2020, Oedipus and Antigone of antiquity and modernity, and perfectly caught and rendered flashes of daily experience. This gritty and gorgeous tapestry miraculously resolves into a pair of familiar and tragic mirrored sunglasses, behind which sits a legendary emptiness.

In Karen An-hwei Lee's Love Chronicles of the Octopodes, an octopus named Emily finds herself thrown to the other side of the universe. In this future of unregulated gene editing, Emily harbors the soul of a human poet and navigates her life in a lagoon as a bumbling "rogue soul" enamored of black spice cake, botanical monographs, and gingerbread recipes, while romanced by personified moonlight.

Donald Breckenridge has been the best novelist writing about and in New York City since the MTA used tokens and Giuliani was halfway sane.
–Joshua Cohen, Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Netanyahus

"Breckenridge draws on personal history and Sophocles’s Oedipus cycle in his stimulating latest."

Two rave reviews for Karen An-hwei Lee's new novel LOVE CHRONICLES OF THE OCTOPODES, out 3/23/23.

From Publishers Weekly:
"Poet, translator, and novelist Lee (The Maze of Transparencies) shows off all her talents in this singular sci-fi novel... Lee’s confident, graceful, and richly poetic writing expands the strange, dreamlike narrative in all directions at once, like slow outward ripples of water. The result is a lyrical meditation on art, science, and consciousness that readers won’t soon forget."
https://www.publishersweekly.com/9781940400105

From Spamzine and Ian Dreiblatt:
"Karen An-Hwei Lee’s Love Chronicles of the Octopodes is an ink-cloud of real mystery, a record of the experiential surplus that overflows any attempt to make sense of our most basic and holy predicaments. The language is plated and dexterous, an exosuit for contemplations that has no trouble craning into the weird shapes they demand. Philosophical, xenosagacious, exquisitely attuned to the soul-kicking improbabilities that animate it, Love Chronicles is a fugitive experiment in confessing the unreal truth of our all-defining displacements."
