Hong Kong is set to host the historic 26th AIPS Asia Congress for the first time in the association’s history. The event, scheduled to take place later this month, has already confirmed participation from delegates representing 29 out of 30 AIPS Asia member countries — a testament to the growing unity and momentum within the continent’s sports media community.
The Hong Kong Sports Press Association (HKSPA), the local host, is putting in tremendous efforts to ensure the congress is a resounding success. “This congress will not only strengthen regional cooperation but also open new opportunities for collaboration and growth among Asian sports journalists,” said Hee Don Jung.
The congress program features key discussions on the future of sports journalism in Asia, training sessions for young reporters, strategic planning, and cultural exchanges — all designed to reinforce AIPS Asia’s commitment to excellence, integrity, and innovation in sports media.

epali Sports Journalists Enlightened on Esports at “Know Your Games” Training Program

Kathmandu, January 24, 2025 – On the occasion of International Day of Education,
the Nepal Sports Journalist Forum (NSJF) Academy, in collaboration with the Nepal
Esports Association (NESA), organized a landmark training program titled "Know
Your Games", under the theme "Igniting the Esports Movement in Nepal." This
initiative aimed to educate Nepali sports journalists about the rapidly expanding
world of esports, enhancing their understanding and ability to report on this emerging
field.
“Know Your Games” is an initiative by the NSJF Academy to train its member
journalists in understanding various sports, including their technicalities, to ensure
accurate and insightful sports reporting. This edition, focusing on esports, sought to
bridge the knowledge gap between traditional sports media and the growing realm of
competitive gaming.
Held at the Blue Star Complex, Thapathali, the program brought together 30 sports
journalists from leading Nepali media outlets. The event was designed to empower
journalists with comprehensive knowledge of esports, its global growth, and Nepal’s
opportunities within this fast-paced industry.
NSJF Academy Chairperson Niranjan Rajbanshi, who also serves as the Treasurer
of AIPS Asia, inaugurated the event. He highlighted the significance of educating
journalists about esports, which is transforming the sports landscape globally. "This
program has been an eye-opener for many of us in the sports journalism community.
Esports is no longer just entertainment; it is a serious industry with immense
potential for Nepal," he remarked.
NESA President Suraj Dongol delivered an in-depth presentation on the global and
local esports landscape, emphasizing Nepal’s potential in the international esports
ecosystem. His session shed light on how Nepal can integrate into the global esports
movement by fostering talent and building a strong ecosystem.
Nepal’s IESF-certified referees, Arun Mishra and Saujanya Shrestha, provided
technical insights into esports formats, scoring systems, and competitive gaming
structures. Their session offered participants a clear understanding of how
tournaments are organized, judged, and scored, making esports accessible for
accurate reporting.

Two-year countdown: Dates for AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ confirmed

The upcoming edition of Asia’s crown jewel – the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ – will take place from January 7 to February 5, 2027, across three cities – the Kingdom’s capital Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar, marking the two-year countdown to the 19th edition of the Continent’s most prestigious men’s football tournament.

A total of five stadiums in Riyadh will host the Continent’s elite: the King Fahd Sports City Stadium, the King Saud University Stadium, Imam Mohammed Ibn Saud University Stadium, Kingdom Arena and the Al Shabab Stadium.

Two stadiums have been confirmed for Jeddah – the King Abdullah Sports City and the Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sports City Stadium – with a new state-of-the-art venue to be built in Al Khobar, completing the world-class infrastructure set to provide the backdrop for Asia’s top 24 national teams.

Chairperson of the Organising Committee for AFC Asian Cup (OCAC) Mariano V. Araneta Jr., who received an overview of the upcoming plans during the 3rd OCAC meeting in Riyadh, before the decisions were ratified by the AFC Executive Committee, said: “The record-setting AFC Asian Cup™ in Qatar exceeded all our expectations. In every way, Qatar 2023 has set the benchmark of excellence for all future editions of Asia’s flagship tournament.

“We are resolute in our commitment to improve Asia’s crown jewel with each passing edition and the foundations are now in place for Saudi Arabia to host a truly exceptional tournament in 2027.

“The focus of global football is now shifting towards the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and we thank the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and the Local Organising Committee for their remarkable efforts thus far.

“We are confident that they will bring to bear their top-class hosting capabilities and warm hospitality for the benefit of everyone across the Continent and beyond, and we wish them the very best of success.”

President of Saudi Arabian Football Federation Mr. Yasser Al Misehal commented: “Confirming the dates and selecting the stadiums for the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ is a strategic milestone in our journey to host the tournament. This announcement goes beyond simply identifying locations and schedules; it reflects the ongoing high-level collaboration between us and the AFC as we work towards delivering an exceptional tournament that fulfills the aspirations of the entire Asian continent.”

He added: “We are working tirelessly to ensure that the stadiums not only meet the highest international standards but also offer an unforgettable experience for both players and fans. With the tournament’s timing optimally set for teams and supporters, we are confident that we will deliver a comprehensive sporting experience that extends beyond the matches themselves, creating a unique and integrated event that showcases Saudi Arabia’s status as a hub for major international sporting events.”

Eighteen teams have already sealed their places at the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™. The remaining berths will be decided via the Qualifiers Final Round, which is scheduled to commence from March 2025 and features six groups of four teams – confirmed at last month’s draw – with the winners of each group to make up the final cast.
