THE ECONOMIC DISPLACEMENT AHEAD: WHY OUR PEOPLE MUST REPOSITION NOW

Markets do not remember who arrived first. They reward those who control capital, production, logistics, technology, and networks.

While political debates on restructuring dominate the airwaves, a quieter and more dangerous process is already underway: the systematic displacement of indigenous traders from the markets they once dominated. Chinese and Indian entrepreneurs are not merely selling goods. They are building factories, distribution systems, commercial properties, and supply chains from Lagos to Kano, Aba to Igweocha. Other Nigerian regions are accumulating capital and organizing at scale. International investors are embedding themselves in the commercial architecture of the country.

The warning is simple and urgent: do not wait until the market has already been taken.

Complaining about “marginalization” after displacement has occurred is too late. Economic nationalism without capacity is empty rhetoric. Government will not protect Igbo businesses; history has already shown this. Survival will not come from slogans or from hoping others will collapse. It will come from manufacturing, organized enterprises, strategic partnerships, investment funds, and control of the higher rungs of the value chain.

Partnership with Chinese and Indian capital is not surrender if it is pursued from a position of strength rather than dependency. Isolation after any future political reconfiguration would be self-defeating. The goal is not walls. It is ownership, productivity, and the ability to compete.

The Chinese are positioning.
The Indians are positioning.
Other regions are positioning.

The question that remains is: where are we positioning?

Build. Invest. Manufacture. Partner. Organize. Compete.
Prepare before the transformation becomes irreversible.

Political freedom without economic capacity is incomplete freedom.

The Imo born nightlife entrepreneur and socialite accused some rich men from Anambra of pouring major investments into Lagos and Asaba instead of Anambra.

He asked them to point to visible projects they have put in their own state.

He challenged them to build Anambra instead of running to Lagos and Asaba.

In the shadow of blood and betrayal, a nation teeters on the edge of fracture.

Episode 1 left us in the wreckage of 1966: coups, counter-coups, and the anti-Eastern massacres that drove hundreds of thousands of refugees home in terror. The federation was already cracked. Trust was gone. Survival itself hung in the balance.

Now, in The Road to Separation, Frederick Forsyth’s partisan 1969 account takes us into the desperate months that followed. He shows a people who no longer believed any government outside their region would protect them. Ojukwu still searched for a political lifeline. That search led to Aburi, Ghana, in January 1967 a tense summit where military leaders sat face-to-face and, for a brief moment, seemed to agree on a looser, safer arrangement. Regional autonomy. Consensus on major decisions. Space to breathe. A last chance to hold the country together without more killing.

But the ink was barely dry before the understanding began to unravel. Different readings of the same words. Pressure from advisers. A decree that, from the Eastern view, rewrote the deal. Tapes released. Revenues seized. Meetings boycotted. The gulf widened by the day.

Then came the final provocations of May 1967: a unanimous Eastern mandate for independence, followed almost immediately by Gowon’s emergency powers and the carving of the East into three new states. On 30 May the Republic of Biafra was proclaimed not, Forsyth insists, as an act of aggression, but as a defensive necessity after massacres, broken promises, and the redrawing of the map without consent.

Later historians would weigh miscalculations and rigid positions on both sides. Forsyth’s book, written from inside Biafra, offers the perspective: the East felt it had been chased out of Nigeria.

And this is only the beginning.

What kind of men stood on opposite sides of this chasm? How did their backgrounds, temperaments, and private calculations shape the catastrophe that was about to unfold? In the episodes ahead Family Writers Press International will examine the contrasting portraits of Ojukwu and Gowon, the slide from political rupture into open war, the international forces that chose sides, the blockade that turned hunger into a weapon, and the long, grinding struggle that would cost hundreds of thousands of lives. The road to secession was only the first stretch of a far darker journey. The true test of survival and the full weight of what both sides had set in motion still lies ahead.
