This is hands down one of my favourite tools to work with in clinic because when we understand what’s going on in the gut, we get clarity across the whole system 🌀

You might consider a microbiome map if you’re dealing with:

– Chronic constipation or bloating
– Eczema, psoriasis or other inflammatory skin conditions
– Persistent or cystic acne
– Heavy or irregular periods
– Hormonal imbalances (including oestrogen excess or low progesterone)
– Thyroid dysfunction (Hashimoto’s, sluggish metabolism, fatigue)
– Histamine intolerance or immune reactivity
– Anxiety, brain fog, or mood instability
– Nutrient deficiencies despite a “healthy” diet

Not sure if this test is right for you?

Bit of a personal post (with a little health message still woven in 🫣).

I finished 2024 completely burnt out: injured, inflamed, and carrying a solid 6–8kg more than my usual weight. Despite eating well and running as much as I could, my body felt like it was working against me. And as a control freak, I wasn’t having it 😆

So this year, I decided to do things differently. I overhauled my training, drastically reduced my alcohol intake, and stripped back as many unnecessary stressors as I could. I didn’t really change what I was eating other than changing up my coffee order - which I’m still going strong on the long black with protein powder 🙈

And now? I’m actually starting to feel like myself again - without restriction, without obsessing. Just steady, simple shifts that helped bring my body out of survival mode.

Looking back, I honestly put last year’s weight gain and inflammation down to one thing: chronic stress. I was living in a constant state of fight-or-flight. And while my coping tools—running and wine—are still around, I’m much more mindful of how I use them.

If you’re not feeling your best, start with the basics. Look at your stress. Support your nervous system. The rest tends to follow 🫶🏻

“Mum, I can’t touch your skin, it’s on fire” 🔥
– My 6-year-old, mid-snuggle attempt and me post-ovulation and an oven.

See, he’s not wrong (I run hot at the best of times). But after ovulation, progesterone kicks in, and it’s thermogenic. That subtle body heat surge you feel? It’s real. And if you’re tracking your cycle, that temperature shift matters.

It confirms ovulation.
It reflects progesterone levels.
It shows when your infertile window begins (yes, even if you’re not trying to conceive).
It can even be an early pregnancy clue.
⁣
Basal body temp (BBT) tracking is one of the most underrated fertility tools out there. Layer it with leutenising hormone (LH) strips and hormone testing (Day 3 & Day 21), and you’ve got a real-time window into your hormones.

📊 Low temps? Short luteal phase? Constantly running cold? These are signs worth unpacking.

We spend so much time trying to “fix” our periods from the outside in: chasing the right supplement, trying a new cycle-syncing trend, googling every odd cramp or mood swing.

But ovulation?

That’s not a surface-level event.

It’s the end result of a deeply layered, whole-body conversation.

🔴 It begins with the quiet rhythm makers: cortisol, melatonin, and insulin.
🔴 Then it depends on your ability to clear and regulate oestrogen.
🔴 Only then do we get that beautiful, golden surge of progesterone.

And with that comes the real magic:

→ Better skin
→ More stable moods
→ Cycle regularity
→ Confidence
→ Libido
→ Fertility

This is why we don’t treat periods in isolation.

This is why we don’t just throw supplements at symptoms.

This is why we start with the foundations: nervous system, sleep, blood sugar, detox.

✨ You don’t need to guess what’s “wrong” with your cycle.

You just need to understand the ecosystem.

Let this be your reminder:
Ovulation isn’t just about babies.
It’s about health, energy, and vitality at every stage 🌀

Not all hormone symptoms are hormonal.

Sometimes, they’re microbial. Or metabolic. Or rooted in elimination pathways that aren’t doing their job.

If you’re experiencing things like:

• Heavy or painful periods
• Breast tenderness
• Hormonal skin breakouts
• Bloating that cycles with your bleed
• Mood shifts that feel disproportionate
…it might not be about your hormones themselves.

It might be about what’s not being cleared.

Your gut microbiome, specifically the estrobolome, plays a direct role in how oestrogen is processed and eliminated.

When that system is off (think dysbiosis, low fibre, sluggish detox pathways), oestrogen gets reabsorbed instead of excreted.

Over time, that creates a higher oestrogen load in the body, without any change in hormone production.

Fibre helps clear that load.

→ Binds excess estrogen
→ Lowers β-glucuronidase activity
→ Supports SHBG production
→ Improves microbial balance

No trends. No shortcuts.
Just physiology—working better 🌀

I spent yesterday diving deep into pathology prep for one of today’s return consults. Every single blood marker—yes, even the ones not flagged—is analysed.

Because in naturopathy, we don’t stop at “normal.”
We ask: is it optimal?
Is your body thriving, or just scraping by?

This is where things get interesting. Where the subtle shifts, the slight imbalances, the early signals, before they become symptoms, can be seen and addressed.

Now, this isn’t about bashing GPs. They’re doing the best they can with 10–15 minutes, and within the system they're in.

But it is a call-out to the limitations of that system. Because so much can be missed in the space between lines, in the ratios, in the whispers the body sends before they become screams.

And this is exactly why naturopathy exists.
To offer what’s often missing: time, space, curiosity 🌀

Your period is late… but the 3 negative pregnancy tests say you’re not pregnant. What is going onnnn? 🤯

Let’s get one thing straight: a late period doesn’t just mean pregnancy.

It can mean your body’s under stress.

It can mean you haven’t ovulated yet.

It can mean your hormones are in flux, and your body’s doing its best to adapt.

Here’s the thing:

Changes in your cycle are often the first signs your body gives you that something’s out of balance.

They’re early warnings, not random events.

It could be:

– Stress disrupting your hypothalamus
– Under-eating or overtraining throwing off energy signals
– Thyroid function or PCOS delaying ovulation
– Coming off the pill and waiting for your natural rhythm to return
– Or something deeper, like nutrient depletion or autoimmune factors

✨ Your body isn’t being difficult; it’s trying to keep you safe.

If your cycles have become unpredictable, long, or missing altogether…

It’s time to stop guessing and start decoding.

There’s a difference between discomfort and pain that takes over your week.

The kind that shows up days before bleeding starts, that radiates into your back or down your legs, and leaves you feeling completely depleted 🪫

When pain feels this way, especially in the context of suspected or diagnosed endometriosis, it’s often not just hormonal—it’s inflammatory.

Enter curcumin, the active compound in turmeric.

It’s been shown to reduce inflammatory markers (like COX-2 and prostaglandins), modulate immune activity, and help lower oxidative stress — all of which are relevant when we’re looking at endo-related pain.

And the good news?

This isn’t something that only exists in supplement form.
You can work curcumin in through food — cooked with healthy fats, paired with black pepper, and used regularly in meals or teas. Of course, supplements can be useful too, depending on what else is going on.

This isn’t about a quick fix, but about shifting the terrain that allows pain to keep showing up.

Small daily inputs. Long-term change 🌀

Depression, low motivation, irritability, and that sense of isolation — these aren’t just “in your head.” They can be driven by deeper physiological imbalances.

Low testosterone (androgen insufficiency), chronic stress, nutrient depletion, poor sleep, and underlying conditions like fatty liver disease or thyroid dysfunction all play a role in how you feel.

What’s often overlooked?

—The role of diet in producing neurochemicals like serotonin and dopamine
—The impact of blood sugar regulation and protein intake on brain function
—The connection between the gut microbiome and the nervous system
— How low magnesium, B vitamins, or vitamin D can quietly chip away at resilience

Mood is complex, but it is not separate from the body 🌀

This month, I’ll be shining a spotlight on men’s health, from hormones to mood to metabolism. If there’s an important man in your life who needs to hear this, share it with them. It’s time we had more of these conversations 🫶🏻
