It’s been too late to run Pokhara International Airport (PIA). Nepal should prioritize the immediate operation of the Pokhara International Airport for several reasons, mostly for economic gain and tourism development.
As Pokhara is a major tourist hub, known for its natural beauty, adventure sports, and cultural attractions. The full operation of an international airport will attract more direct flights, reducing dependency on Kathmandu airport and boosting tourism revenue.
So, increased tourist inflow will support local businesses, hotels, and employment, and ultimately overall growth of the Gandaki Province.
Also it is important for the reduction in aviation congestion in TIA in Kathmandu as it is already overburdened, leading to frequent delays and flight cancellations.
Another important thing is for regional connectivity and trade. Direct international flights to Pokhara will enhance connectivity with key markets like India, China, and Southeast Asia.
The airport was built with significant investment and delayed operations means wasted resources and lost economic potential.
Pokhara’s proximity to China (via the Himalayas) makes it a potential hub for cross-border trade and tourism under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
So, immediate operation of the Pokhara International Airport is vital for Nepal’s economic growth, tourism recovery, aviation efficiency, and disaster preparedness. The government should fast-track approvals, attract airlines, and maximize the airport’s potential to benefit the nation.
