After the summer upheaval

Summer is the season of scorching sunshine, of people flocking to seaside resorts, of sunbathing on golden beaches, of evenings under the moon, of pizza and ice cream in open-air cafés and pizzerias. It is also a time of “great chaos under heaven,” as Mao Zedong reputedly said, though, in this case, the situation is not exactly excellent, at least for residents in tourist stricken villages in Southern Italy....

CRISPR 2.0 and the deaf: An ethical debate

In this Brave New World of bioengineering, writer Stewart J. Lawrence makes the case that "attempting to remake deaf people in the image of the non-deaf is not just discriminatory; it’s an outright cultural invasion." Join the fascinating discussion....

There’s an age-old ethical proposition: Just because you can do something, it doesn’t mean that you should. This age-old proposition applies in spades to the issue of “gene-editing” to eliminate certain kinds of hereditary deafness. It’s part of a widening ethical debate over the uses of t...

A Detroit wishlist for 2026

December. It’s one of my favorite times of year. Call me old-fashioned, but I miss the days of huge mall displays, in-store Black Friday shopping, and going to department stores during the holiday season to smell those fantastic Cinnabons baking and people-watching. Back then, it took longer to find a parking spot than it did to buy gifts! Nowadays, everything can be taken care of with a click of a button....

Acts of service

I discovered it on a summer’s day, while at a yard sale in southwestern Paris. It was a red and gold book, which seemed to have aged well. On the cover was a man in uniform, average height, with a Red Cross armband and a pair of binoculars through which he surveyed a khaki-colored no man’s land. The mouth of a cannon peeped out from beneath the mound he stood on....

Have yourself a low-key little Christmas

Every year I wonder why, just around the end of November, I am not prepared for the doldrums of December that seem to start up immediately upon getting catalogs and Gmail advertisements about what new gadgets and gewgaws I should buy as presents. I’ve been around a long time. I have everything I need, which is not the case for many right now, so I am filling boxes for our version of the Salvation Army here in France....

“House of Guinness”

In her new column, TV Watch, writer Mia Levy blends an intriguing story of a dynastic family on the tightrope walk of fortune and sacrifice, all set against the topsy-turvy backdrop of 19th century Ireland and entangling even the Fenian Brotherhood in the States....

It’s the 27th of May 1868 in Dublin, Ireland. Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness has just died and passed on his family legacy. There is nothing quite like a fresh pint of stout, settling like the debris that rises and falls with the beginning of a new era. The eight-episode mini-series is positively

The best Christmas classics (and some campiness) on film

Christmas is right around the corner! And what better way to get into the spirit of the yuletide season than to watch a classic holiday movie. But which one? There are so many good ones to choose from. And with all that gift-shopping, cooking, tree-trimming, and endless sports-watching, there’s so little time to enjoy all but a few. Here are five (and some change) that have stood the test of time....

ChatGPT is outraged

Certain moments in life seem small but end up being big. Monumental. Life altering. Moments you keep to yourself and share with no one. Moments that bring you pain. Sometimes these moments are ones you feel you should move past. But you can’t. So you decide to face the music. To own up to the feelings you are feeling. To speak up about injustice....

God, help me

A young man dealing with the pragmatics of deceased loved ones ponders the implications of soul destinations: Can a mother and aunt be buried together or does the spirit need room to roam? After some 40 years, he still has some hope God will answer heaven's door....

In August 1988, my mother died in Washington, D.C. — her second home after Rome — and made a very simple request: that she be buried in a leafy, quiet cemetery away

Photoessay: The Crèche

If you’ve been lucky enough to visit New York City during the Christmas season, you may have nipped into the Metropolitan Museum for the express pleasure of seeing the Angel Tree, an exquisite baroque nativity scene from eighteenth century Naples, which is displayed annually in the Medieval Sculpture Hall. Standing in front of the magnificent Spanish choir screen from the Cathedral of Valladolid, the giant spruce is adorned with a host of silk-robed angels and cherubs who ascend and alight upon the holy family....

Columnist Miral Askar pays tribute to Assata Shakur, a fugitive from the law and a champion of justice....

Some weeks ago, I stumbled upon a story that hasn’t left me since. It was late. I was half scrolling, half thinking, trying to shake off the static of the day, when I came across an old photograph. A young black woman, her gaze steady and unflinching, eyes full of something between exhaustion and ...

Review: The Living Infinite

The Living Infinite: A Novel, by Chantel Acevedo, crafts a historical fiction story based on Eulalia, the nineteenth-century Spanish daughter to the monarch, or Infanta. Eulalia was not an heir to the throne; Spanish monarchies recognize only heirs to the throne with the title of prince or princess, with other royal children dubbed Infante (male) or infanta (female). Centered around the Bourbon court toward the end of her family’s reign, the story that Acevedo conjures shows royalty as confining golden chains woven with heartbreak, sacrifice, performance, and endless expectations....
