We are pleased to announce the inaugural book from the forthcoming Antikythera x MIT Press series:
Blaise Agüera y Arcas’s What Is Intelligence? arrives September 16, 2025, offering a rigorous and far-reaching exploration of intelligence, from molecules to organisms, societies, and AI. Drawing from neuroscience, machine learning, physics, and philosophy, Blaise argues that AI’s emergence is not an anomaly but a natural consequence of evolution.
This book will also be serialized as part of Antikythera’s new digital journal, journal.antikythera.org, launching in May 2025 with a preview available now. Created in partnership with MIT Press, the journal pairs leading authors with cutting-edge design studios to transform their ideas into immersive multimedia pieces.
▫️First drop: What Is Life? - now live on the journal and in print
▫️Second drop: Chapters 2 & 3 - available now
▫️More chapters will be released in the lead-up to publication
What Is Intelligence? takes seriously the idea that modern AI systems may have a claim to intelligence, consciousness, and even free will. It reframes the predictive brain hypothesis, explores the evolutionary and social origins of intelligence, and challenges assumptions about the nature of cognition itself.
