A little fun fact for you, as we head off for the holiday weekend.

The "no white after Labor Day" fashion rule, originating in the late 19th century, dictated that white clothing was reserved for the summer months and was a symbol of leisure and upper-class status.

Wealthy socialites wore white outfits during summer vacations to stay cool and differentiate themselves from those with new money. White clothing was not practical for the dirty, unpaved streets of the time, and Labor Day marked the end of summer vacation and the return to city life. When summer ended, they would return to the city, putting away their white clothes until the next warm season.

The expansion of sanitation departments and cleaner streets in cities, particularly in the early 20th century, removed the impracticality of wearing white in urban areas. In the 1960s and ‘70s, the social divide the rule was meant to represent became less pronounced, and the trend began to fade.

No matter where you stand on "no white after Labor Day", we hope you have a great one.

We agree, Sandy Hook Promise, that our children deserve so much better. A moment like this can feel overwhelming and somewhat paralyzing. We've all seen this tragedy too many times before.

Taking the first step when you desire change can feel the most difficult. Sharing this post and following on social are easy actions to take today to support our children and do better by them tomorrow.

A gunman opened fire on young children sitting in pews as they attended back-to-school mass at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, today, killing two children aged 8 and 10, and wounding at least 17 other people, 14 of whom were children.

How many more children must die before we act? Our kids deserve to be safe in their classrooms and communities, and free from gun violence.
