HADON OF ANCIENT OPAR proofs are in the house! That is, Meteor House!

First ever standalone hardcover!

Amazing new cover painting by Bob Eggleton!

Interior illustrations from the 1974 DAW paperback by the late, great Roy Krenkel!

Part of Meteor House's plans for a complete matching set of the entire Philip José Farmer's Khokarsa and Ancient Opar Series!

The proofs look great!

***

Opar, a lost colony of Atlantis, hidden deep in the heart of Africa, is shrouded in mystery and awash with incredible riches. From this ancient city comes Hadon, an impoverished but ambitious young man who sets out to enter and win the great games of Klakor—a bloody contest in which only the strongest and most cunning warrior will survive. He seeks the ultimate prize: to rule the Khokarsan Empire alongside the powerful High Priestess. But his quest for the throne leads him into the wild lands beyond the empire’s edge, where he finds himself embroiled in a bloody civil war. . .

Following last year’s publication of Time’s Last Gift, the prequel to Farmer’s Ancient Opar series, Meteor House is thrilled to announce the Signed Hardcover Limited Edition of Philip José Farmer’s Hadon of Ancient Opar. This is the first stand alone hardcover edition of one of Farmer’s seminal titles. Just like Time’s Last Gift, this edition features striking cover art by Bob Eggleton—and here is a surprise—the original Roy Krenkel illustrations from the 1974 DAW paperback edition!

This edition of Hadon of Ancient Opar also features substantial bonus material!

Bonus Features:

Heritage of the Gray-Eyed God (Foreword by Edgar Rice Burroughs and Farmer expert Robert R. Barrett)
The Literary Archaeology of Khokarsa (Introduction by Burroughs and Farmer expert Christopher Paul Carey)
3 Maps by Charles Berlin
Addendum 1 – Description of Maps
Addendum 2 – Chronology of Khokarsa
Afterword – A Guide to Khokarsa by Christopher Paul Carey
Cast of Characters
Peoples and Tribes
Religion
Geography
Khokarsan Glossary

Available in both a Trade Paperback and Signed Hardcover Limited Edition (signed by, Charles Berlin, Christopher Paul Carey, and Bob Eggleton, Robert Barrett passed away earlier this year before we could send him the signature sheets), the hardcover features a leatherette cover with gold foil stamping and custom printed color end papers. This is another high-quality collectible in the tradition of Meteor House’s prior limited-edition hardcovers.

As always the print run of the Signed Hardcover Limited Edition will be determined by the number of preorders we receive. We’re taking preorders now and both editions will ship in June (or maybe early/mid July, since we just got the proofs) 2026.

The trade paperback edition is $25
The signed hardcover limited edition is $70
Or you can buy them together for only $95

Bill Schafer has announced Subterranean Press will be closing around the end of 2027, which is very sad news for lovers of genre fiction and fine limited-edition books. And to be honest, without Subterranean Press, there might not be a Meteor House, as SubPress was, and continues to be, a huge inspiration.

In 2006, SubPress approached Michael Croteau*, webmaster of Philip José Farmer's official website and publisher of the fanzine Farmerphile: The Magazine of Philip José Farmer, to write the afterword to their first Farmer collection, The Best of Philip José Farmer. Later that year, after a deal with another publisher fell through, Paul Spiteri* brought the mammoth collection of Farmer rarities he edited, Pearls from Peoria, to SubPress. The following year SubPress published Up From the Bottomless Pit** and Other Stories, which contained all of Farmer's material from the first ten issues of Farmerphile, including the serialized title novel.

Friend of Meteor House, Christopher Paul Carey, edited that collection as well as Venus on the Half-Shell and Others in 2008 and The Other in the Mirror (an omnibus collection of the novels Fire and the Night, Jesus on Mars,** and Night of Light) in 2009. Also in 2009, SubPress published the brand new collaboration, The Evil in Pemberley House,** by Farmer and Win Scott Eckert,* This was followed by the Gary K. Wolfe-edited collection Up the Bright River in 2010, and in 2012 the omnibus Gods of Opar which collected the novels Hadon of Ancient Opar** and Flight to Opar** by Farmer and the long-awaited third installment in the series, The Song of Kwasin** by Farmer and Carey.

Now that we think about it, in terms of Farmer publishing, it's hard to tell where SubPress ends and Meteor House starts. And of course, although this post is Farmer-centric, SubPress has published hundreds of other amazing books by incredible talents over the last thirty years. Bill Schafer and the team at SubPress were wonderful to Phil, and have been great partners to us since we started publishing our own Farmer editions. They embody a model for quality that we at Meteor House continue to aspire to. We wish them all the best.

What are some of your favorite non-Farmer, Subterranean Press books?

In our forthcoming collection, Riverworld Odyssey, Alex Berman, founder of Phantasia Press, tells the story of collecting all three dedication copies of Strange in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein, (Philip José Farmer was one of the dedicatees).

Those three books just sold at auction for an amazing price (see the link in the first comment).

Flight to Opar – New Limited Edition!

In 2015 Meteor House published the first hardcover limited edition of Flight to Opar. This long out of print and hard to find edition was a standard hardcover with gray cloth covered boards printed by Lightning Source, one of the largest printers in the world. In 2020 Meteor House began publishing much finer hardcover limited editions with gold foil stamping on the leatherette covered boards, custom printed color end papers, and often with color interior artwork as well.

After publishing Time’s Last Gift in 2025 and Hadon of Ancient Opar in 2026 (now taking preorders) in these much nicer editions, we’ve decided to redo Flight to Opar (and The Song of Kwasin next year in 2027) in these gorgeous editions as well. In addition to the new finer aspects of the book, we have also contracted with the estate of legendary artist Roy Krenkel to include the original illustrations from the 1976 DAW paperback edition in our new limited edition and the new version of the trade paperback.

Also included in this new edition is the story “A Kick in the Side” by Song of Kwasin co-author Christopher Paul Carey. This bonus story, previously published in The Worlds of Philip José Farmer 1, takes place during the events of Flight to Opar. The cherry on top of this new limited edition is that it is signed by CCharles Berlin CChristopher Paul Carey BBob Eggleton and S.M. Stirling!

Details on how to order the original trade paperback edition (before they sell out) or to preorder the new editions (due out in August) are at this link: https://meteorhousepress.com/flight-to-opar-new-edition/

For over a decade, our readers, fans of Philip José Farmer from all over the world, have been clamoring for us to publish a Riverworld book.

Now, Meteor House is delighted to announce Riverworld Odyssey, a journey through every piece of associated fiction, every pertinent essay, letter, article, and speech, every item of ephemera we could gather, in one Brobdingnagian volume, to tell the story—the history—of one of science fiction’s greatest series.

Included in this near 600 page collection are letters, outlines, essays, speeches, stories, and a novel by Philip José Farmer himself as well as essays by Alex Berman, John Gregory Betancourt, Michael Croteau, Tracy Knightt, Paul Spiteri, Bruce Sterling, and Mary A.
