I have also worked with many dogs who were "fixed" under 6 months and ended up have bladder control issues. It's time to reevaluate for all of future pups.

The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA)🏥 has just announced their new spay & neuter guidelines.🙀 Due to growing evidence of adverse health effects of traditional gonadectomy (spay/neuter) and increases in cancers and joint disorders, WSAVA suggest the best practice for RESPONSIBLE pet parents is to leave dogs and cats unaltered (intact). Additionally noting, spaying or neutering a dog younger than 6 months of age is NOT recommended because of an increase of detrimental health risks. Acknowledging in some circumstances, such as rescues and shelters, where leaving an animal intact is not an option, they stress the importance of education and acceptance of newer, alternative sterilization techniques that have less long-term health concerns. 🙌

Discussing these alternative techniques and the pro’s and con’s today, plus much more in the Inside Scoop.

I Discovered Zooniverse ( Zooniverse ) !

Animals and conservation have been a passion for me my entire life, so when I discovered Zooniverse a few days back, I became SO ecstatic!

Zooniverse is a platform bringing together real research projects from organizations and researchers seeking volunteers to help them make new discoveries, train programs for better animal classification, and more. Not only are there animal and conservation projects, there are projects for health and medical, science of all sorts, literature, and more!

Lots of grebes are landing on wet pavement thinking it’s water. Grebes cannot walk or take off on land so they must be moved to a lake or pond and put directly in the water. If you do find a grebe on pavement and know of a bird rehabber please call them so they can check the bird for injuries. Use the animal help now website to find one. If no rehabber around please carefully move the grebe to a lake. Use a heavy towel to cover its whole body including his head. Wear eye goggles and gloves. Watch out for “stabby” beak. And then place in box and drive to a lake and then put directly into water. Do not touch the feathers because oil from your hands can harm them. Be careful. For more advice you can text us at 303-618-0357.

We're starting to get a lot of calls about healthy baby fledglings on the ground. We share this infographic from our friend’s at Rocky Mountain Wildlife Alliance every year, and we hope you will too!

Not all owls on the ground need our help - it can be normal this time of year. Parents will continue to care for fledglings on the ground and many of these young birds are exceptional climbers and will climb to safety if left alone. If you are unsure if an owl or any bird is healthy, take a picture from a respectful distance and contact a local wildlife professional for direction. They will guide you from there.

Take a look at this graphic to help you learn when to intervene and when to leave babies alone. And if you have questions, be sure to give our experienced wildlife rehabilitators a call! We have been saving wildlife in Citrus County and the surrounding areas since 1985!

Happy Eclipse Day!

Hello All! Today is the big day, a solar eclipse that some of the world will get to enjoy in its totality!

Eclipses are extremely magical and powerful events, if you are going to observe it, use protective glasses and keep your pets protected as well. Keep in mind that some animals may act odd, confused, or anxious during this time. Help keep them calm, keep them indoors, and schedule that daily walk for earlier or later in the day!

Overall, have a wonderful and safe day!

Thank you Nature World Wildlife Rescue Sanctuary, Inc.!

This photo has been making the rounds again this year...

Please DO NOT offer yarn, string or human hair for birds to build nests! Every year we see both young and adult birds being admitted to wildlife rehabilitators due to this. It can sometimes result in the bird losing their foot or entire leg from the yarn/string/hair slowly tightening and cutting off circulation .

DO NOT offer laundry dryer lint either. The lint collected in your dryer filter may seem like ideal nesting material, but it isn’t. It will soak up water and may be steeped with chemicals unhealthy for birds, such as remnants of detergent and softener.

Also a warning about offering pet hair. Many of our pets are treated with specialty shampoos or tick/lice treatments which stay on the hair and can be harmful to birds collecting it for nesting material. DO NOT offer pet hair that has been exposed to any shampoo treatments or chemicals.

Some safer alternatives from the National Wildlife Federation's Blog...

Twigs
For birds looking for small twigs, almost any tree or shrub you plant will do. When small branches or twigs fall from a shrub and gather at its base, leave them for birds to pick up, preferably in lengths under 4 inches.

Greenery
Some birds line nests with soft plant matter. You can provide this accoutrement by growing catkin-bearing trees and shrubs such as cottonwood, maple, mulberry, willows, poplar and beech.

Fluff
Many birds—hummingbirds spring to mind, but other songbirds as well—gravitate toward fluffy material, such as seeds with silky attachments designed to waft them on the wind or seed pods with a soft, hairlike covering. You can provide these items via cottonwood trees, lamb’s ear (ground cover), milkweed (also good for attracting monarch butterflies), honeysuckle, and clematis.

Mud
If you have a pesky spot in your garden that refuses to grow anything but dirt, try adding a little water and see if you can grow mud. Mud is a favored nesting material for swallows and swifts and even the common robin.

Dry grass
When you trim your yard, perhaps you can find a spot in your garden for laying out a selection of dried grass stems cut 2 to 4 inches long. Grass is a common ingredient in songbird nests, used by species from native sparrows to robins.

Moss
If you have a shady spot in your yard, trying growing moss; with its velvety green growth, moss is a beautiful highlight for any moist garden and is a favored building material of some hummingbird species.
