CLASSIC NOVELS

🌊 BENEATH THE SURFACE🌊

BY SANNI BARAKATULLAH WA UMM KHOYR

Episode One

Zahirah trembled as she held her mother's frail hand, the warmth of her skin a stark contrast to the chill of the hospital room. The beeping of the machines and the soft whir of the ventilator created a cacophony of sounds that seemed to echo through her very being. She felt like she was drowning in a sea of despair, unable to escape the crushing weight of the impending storm.

"Mother, please don't leave me," Zahirah whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. "Please..se"

Her mother's eyes, sunken and weary, locked onto hers, filled with a deep sadness and regret. Zahirah saw the faintest glimmer of a smile on her mother's lips, and she gasped..Never in her life had she felt so shattered and dejected.

Lying on the hospital bed, Mother was repleted with disdain and sorrow. She looked into her daughter's eyes and sighed heavily

"It's okay, Zahirah.I will scape through this by God's Mercy" She adjusted a bit on the bed and spoke on "Hmm! Nothing else matters to me now than your exams fee... I'm so sorry, Zahirah" she gasped, her words barely above a whisper. "I'm sorry that I won't be able to pay for your WAEC fee. I know how much you have been looking forward to taking the exam, and I feel like I've let you down."

Zahirah's eyes welled up with tears as she listened to her mother's words. She could see the regret etched on her face, and it broke her heart.

"Mother, please don't worry about it," Zahirah said, trying to reassure her. "The Almighty is in control.. You just need to focus on getting better."

But her mother shook her head, a determined look on her face. "No, Zahirah, I need to spill it out. I've always wanted the best for you, and I feel like I have failed you in this."

As she spoke, her mother's voice began to grow weaker, and she started to cough. The coughing grew more intense, and Zahirah could see the pain and discomfort etched on her face.

"Ha..Mother, please stop talking," Zahirah sobbed, rushing to her side. "You're going to make it worse."

But her mother insisted on continuing. "No, Zahirah, I'm fine. I just need to say this. I'm so sorry that I won't be able to be there for you, to support you and guide you. But I want you to know that I have faith in you. You're a strong and capable girl, and I know that you'll do great things...."

At that moment, the coughing grew more intense, and Zahirah could see the tears streaming down the contours of her cheeks. She felt a pang of sadness and regret, knowing that her mother was suffering and that she couldn't do anything to help her.

********

Zahirah's mother, Aisha, had been battling with cancer for years, ever since her husband's death. She had been all alone, raising Zahirah, their only child, and working tirelessly to provide for her. Despite her own struggles, Aisha had always put Zahirah first, sacrificing her own needs and desires for the sake of her daughter.

As Zahirah looked at her mother, she remembered the countless nights Aisha had stayed up late outside, doing cleaning and all sorts of odd jobs, making sure Zahirah had everything she needed. She remembered the way Aisha had held her hand, guiding her through the ups and downs of life, always there to offer a listening ear and a comforting word.

Suddenly, Aisha's body began to convulse, her chest rising and falling with rapid, shallow breaths. Zahirah's heart skipped a beat as she realized that her mother's condition was deteriorating fast.

"Mother, no! Subhanallah, no!" Zahirah screamed, her voice hoarse from crying. She quickly scanned the ward, her eyes frantically searching for the nurses around. She spotted one from a corner and hastened to her side.

"Nurse, please! My mother.. .she's...oh God, please come quickly!" Zahirah begged, her voice shaking with desperation.

"Okay, dear, I'm on my way. Go and stay with your mother and try to stay calm." The nurse replied tactlessly.

But Zahirah couldn't stay calm. She felt like she was losing her mother, and couldn't bear the thought of it. She sped off, sprinting down the hospital corridor to find the doctor.

"Doctor! Doctor, please! My mother is dying!" Zahirah cried, grabbing the arm of a passing doctor. "You have to help her! You have to save her!"

The doctor's face was sympathetic "I'm so sorry, young lady. I'll do everything I can, but...please, come with me."

Zahirah followed the doctor down to the ward, her heart racing with fear and anxiety. When they arrived, the nurse was already there, trying to stabilize Aisha. But it was too late. Aisha's body had gone still, her chest no longer rising and falling with breath.

CAMPUS SKIN AND BLISTER

EPISODE 48

The final year of university had finally come to a close, and with it, the excitement of exams and the anticipation of convocation. For Mr. and Mrs. Abdul Salam, it was a moment of immense pride as they watched their daughter, Mufeedah, walk across the stage to receive her degree. The convocation ceremony was a grand affair, with dignitaries and esteemed guests in attendance. The atmosphere was electric, filled with the sound of applause and cheers as the graduates were honored for their hard work and dedication.

As Mufeedah's name was called, her parents beamed with pride, their faces radiant with joy. They commended her gracefully, their voices filled with emotion as they congratulated her on her achievement. "We are so proud of you, Mufeedah," her mother said, tears of happiness streaming down her face. "You have worked so hard and deserve every bit of this success." Her father, Mr. Abdul Salam, nodded in agreement, his eyes shining with pride. "You have made us proud, our dear daughter. We know that you will go on to do great things and make a name for yourself in the world."

The convocation ceremony was indeed a day of great joy and celebration for many graduates, including Jemima. She had worked hard for years to achieve her degree, and finally, the day had arrived when she would be recognized for her efforts. As she walked across the stage to receive, her husband couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride. He had been her rock throughout her academic journey, supporting her through the late nights, early mornings, and late hours of the time.

On the other hand, Samaira was not as fortunate. She had been looking forward to attending the convocation ceremony, but unfortunately, her sickness had other plans. She had been hospitalized for several days, and her condition had taken a turn for the worse. Despite her best efforts, she was unable to attend the ceremony, and she was heartbroken. She had worked just as hard as her friends to be present, and she had been eagerly anticipating the day when she would be recognized for her efforts.

As she laid in her hospital bed, Samaira couldn't help but feel a sense of disappointment and sadness. She had been so looking forward to celebrating this milestone with her friends and family, and now it seemed like that was being taken away from her. She felt like she was missing out on a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it was hard for her to come to terms with it. Her roommates tried to reassure her, telling her that she would have plenty of other opportunities to celebrate, but it wasn't the same.

Despite her absence, Samaira's friends made sure to keep her updated on the ceremony. They sent her photos and videos, and they even live-streamed the event so that she could watch it from her hospital bed. Samaira smiled weakly as she watched the ceremony, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment.

In the end, Samaira's sickness may have deprived her of attending the convocation ceremony, but it couldn't take away her sense of pride and accomplishment. She knew that she had achieved something truly special, and she was grateful for the support of her friends and family. As she looked forward to her recovery, Samaira knew that she would have plenty of opportunities to celebrate her achievement, and she was excited to see what the future held.

**************************************

A few months later, the family was once again gathered together, this time to celebrate a new milestone in Mufeedah's life - her wedding. The ceremony was a grand affair, with friends and family in attendance. The bride, Mufeedah, looked stunning in her colourful wedding gown, her beauty radiating from within. The groom, Abdul Lateef, couldn't take his eyes off her, his face filled with love and adoration.

The atmosphere was filled with emotion. The couple's love for each other was palpable, and it was clear that they were meant to be together. When the ceremony was over, Abdul Lateef smiled and hugged his new bride, Mufeedah, holding her close as they basked in the joy of their union. It was a blissful moment, one that they would cherish for the rest of their lives.

After the wedding, the couple embarked on their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) service year, which took them to their hometown in Agbetu. They were glad to be together, and they made the most of their time in the small town. They explored the local markets, tried the traditional cuisine, and made friends with the people in the community. It was a memorable experience, one that they would always treasure.

As they served together, they grew closer, their love for each other deepening with each passing day. They would often take long walks together, hand in hand, talking about their dreams and aspirations. They would sit together on the porch, watching the sunset, and just enjoy each other's company. It was a beautiful time, one that they would always look back on with fondness.

Indeed, true love had found its place in their abode.

As they navigated the ups and downs of life, they held on to each other, their love growing stronger with each passing day. They knew that their love was a gift, one that they would cherish and nurture for the rest of their lives. As the saying goes, "The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves." For Mufeedah and Abdul Lateef, they had found that happiness, and they were determined to hold on to it forever.

🕵️🕵️THE SHACKLES OF LIFE🕵️🕵️

EPISODE 35

Mawaddah broke down into uncontrollable tears.
She just couldn't take the death phenomenon as it stripped her of the very life she cherished... Mazeedah's

They still have a lot to do together

They would pick up the pieces and move on like best of friends..

They would let of the past and work on the present for the betterment of their futures.

Mazeedah was her only friend all her life and she remained her best friend.

Mawaddah wished she had forgiven her sooner so they could have done a lot of things together before she passed on.

She felt conscious of her guilt-ridden mind.

Islamic burial rites followed a hasty Janazah for the deceased.

Shortly after the burial rites, a woman in her late forties walked up to Mawaddah and requested to have some words with her.

With Yakub by her side, they moved away from the midst of the crowd.

"I heard you were her bossom friend when during her lifetime.... That's why I have come to you" The woman gasped, and then continued

"Mazeedah's death is a great loss to the family... We pray Almighty Allah forgives her shortcomings and grants her Al-Jannatul Firdaous"

"Aamin" Yakub and Mawaddah added

And she continued

"She left her only child behind and none of the families are ready to take in the child... I tried to talk to them but all proved abortive...
And I, myself would have loved to raise her child but... My hands are tight.."

"What do you mean by that, Madam" Yakub asked

Mawaddah remained silent all the time but she was in severe pain and anguish over the loss of her friend.

"I.... I mean I can't take him with me" the woman grumbled

"But,why, Madam... We can't leave the little boy all alone by himself... He is now an orphan and he is too young for that" Yakub retorted

"I know.... I know he needs much more, sir .. but my husband will strangle me to death if I take him home....

The things is we have eight children... And things are not going well with us.. I am a full house wife so my husband is the one struggling to make both ends meet.... it's been tough for us.. that's why i am thinking of taking that boy to the orphanage home.

To be honest with you,his late mother is useless and stingy... She use to behave nonchalantly towards everyone... If you ask others, they will tell you more about her...
As you see me ehn, I'm just doing my right as her father's immediate sister... If not,you won't see my presence here"

Yakub was stuck dumbfounded. He did not know what to say at that moment.

He held his wife close to his chest and patted her back gently.

Few minutes later, Mawaddah forced herself to say something.

She cleared her throat and replied

"We can't guarantee the boy's safety in the orphanage home... Will you permit us to take the boy with us,if you don't mind?"

"Why not?" You people can go with him.... He is your friend's child and he is also yours as well.... Please, take him home with you" the woman replied joyfully.

After the agreement between Mawaddah and Mazeedah's family, they adopted the little boy.

With Harith and the little boy, they became a happy family of five children ; two boys and three girls.

*****************

Two weeks later, Yakub decided to take his family overseas.

He has been transferred there from his company but kept it a secret from his wife because it happened during the death of Mazeedah.

But now that everything is finally settled, he broke the good news to her and she was quite elated.

As soon as the passports and visas were ready, they informed Abu and Ummu Mawaddah and they both rejoiced with them.

".... Thanks so much for everything, Father...I will miss you so much" Mawaddah muttered softly and her father smiled

"And what about me,my daughter? You should take me along so that you won't miss both of us" Ummu Mawaddah teased and they all dissolved into a big round of laughter.

CAMPUS SKIN AND BLISTER

EPISODE 47

The final year resumption had finally set in. Mufeedah and her friends were amongst the excited, yet anxious students. They had to resume very early, and the period was already proving to be hectic. With projects and exams looming, the students were under a lot of pressure to perform well.

Mufeedah and her friends, including Samaira, were no exception. They had to dive straight into their studies, with little time to relax or socialize. Samaira, in particular, was still struggling with her sickness, and it was taking a toll on her academic performance. Despite her best efforts, she was finding it difficult to keep up with her coursework, and her roommates were having to help her out a lot.

One day, as Jemima was sitting in their room, trying to catch up on some reading, her husband called to check on how she was faring. "Hey, how's it going?" he asked, his voice warm and concerned.

Jemima sighed, sounding a bit stressed. "It's been tough, to be honest," she replied. "We have so much work to do, and I'm not sure how we're going to get it all done."

Her husband reassured her, his voice calm and soothing. "Don't worry, it's going to be a success at the end," he said. "You're all working hard, and I'm sure you'll get through it. Just take it one step at a time, and don't forget to take care of yourself."

Jemima smiled, feeling a bit better. "I will, thanks," she said. "And how's my boy doing?"

Her husband chuckled. "He's doing great, as always," he replied. "He's missing you, of course, but he's being taken care of. Just focus on your studies, and we'll take care of everything else"

Jemima nodded, even though her husband couldn't see her. "Hmm, thank you for always being there, Habibi..I am indeed grateful" she chuckled softly.

After ending the call, Jemima put down her phone and looked around the room. Mufeedah had just entered, her hands piled high with handouts and notes. "Hey, guys," she said, greeting her friends as she jumped into her bed.

As she settled in, Mufeedah noticed that Samaira was looking a bit off. She was lying in her bed, her eyes closed, and her face scrunched up in pain. "Hey, Samaira, is everything okay?" Mufeedah asked, concern etched on her face.

Samaira opened her eyes, wincing in pain. "I...I don't know," she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just feel so weak and tired all the time."

Mufeedah's expression turned sympathetic. "Oh, Samaira, I'm so sorry," she said. "We're all here for you, and we'll do whatever we can to help. Just rest and try to take it easy, okay?"

Samaira nodded, a faint smile on her face. "Thanks, Mufeedah," she whispered. "I appreciate it."

As Mufeedah continued to talk to Samaira, Jemima got up from her bed and walked over to them. "Hey, guys, how's it going?" she asked, her eyes fixed on Samaira.

Mufeedah filled her in on Samaira's condition, and Jemima's expression turned concerned. "We need to take care of her," she said. "We can't let her fall behind in her studies."

Mufeedah nodded in agreement. "I know, but we also need to make sure she's taking care of herself," she said. "We can't have her pushing herself too hard and making her condition worse."

As they continued to discuss Samaira's situation, it was clear that they were all determined to support her and help her get through this tough time. They were a team, and they would face whatever challenges came their way, together.

********************************************

It was a beautiful evening, and Abdul Lateef had decided to surprise Mufeedah with a special gift. He arrived at the hostel, eager to see her and present her with the gift. However, as he entered the room, he was disappointed to find that Mufeedah was not there. Instead, he found Jemima sitting on her bed, studying.

"Assalamu alaikum, Jemima," Abdul Lateef said, greeting her with a smile. "I was looking for Mufeedah. Is she around?"

Jemima looked up from her book and smiled. "Wa alaikum salam, Abdul Lateef," she replied. "Mufeedah is not here right now. She went for a lecture."

Abdul Lateef's face fell, but he quickly recovered. "Oh, okay," he said. "I brought some gifts for her. Would you mind delivering them to her when she gets back?"

Jemima's eyes lit up with excitement. "Of course, I'd be happy to," she said. "What are the gifts?"

Abdul Lateef handed her a beautifully wrapped box. "It's a surprise," he said with a smile. "Just give it to her and tell her it's from me."

Jemima took the box and smiled. "I will," she said. "Thank you, Abdul Lateef."

Abdul Lateef smiled and nodded. "You're welcome," he said. "I'll talk to you later, Jemima. Please give Mufeedah my regards."

Jemima nodded and watched as Abdul Lateef left the room. She couldn't wait to see Mufeedah's reaction when she gave her the gift.

Later that day, Mufeedah arrived at the hostel, exhausted from her lecture. Jemima greeted her with a big smile and handed her the box. "Abdul Lateef came by earlier and dropped this off for you," she said.

Mufeedah's eyes widened as she took the box and unwrapped it. Inside, she found a beautiful pair of expensive shoes. She was stunned and couldn't believe her eyes.

"Oh my Goodness, Jemima," she exclaimed. "These are amazing! Abdul Lateef is so sweet."

Jemima smiled and nodded in agreement. "I know, right?" she said. "He really sent an amazing gift. You're so lucky to have him."

Mufeedah couldn't stop staring at the shoes. She was so touched by Abdul Lateef's thoughtful gesture. She decided to call him and thank him personally.

"Assalamu alaikum, Abdul Lateef," she said, when he answered the phone.

"Wa alaikum salam, my Queen," he replied. "How are you?"

Mufeedah smiled, feeling happy and grateful. "I'm good, thanks," she said. "I just got the gift you sent me, and I'm speechless. It's so beautiful and thoughtful of you."

Abdul Lateef's voice was filled with emotion. "I'm glad you like it, Mufeedah," he said. "I just wanted to show you how much I care about you. You're the love of my life, and I want to make you happy."

Mufeedah's heart melted at his words. "I love you too, Abdul Lateef," she said. "Thank you again for the gift. It means so much to me."

Abdul Lateef smiled, feeling happy and contented. "You're welcome, my love," he said. "I'll always be there for you, no matter what."

Mufeedah smiled, feeling grateful and loved. She talked to Abdul Lateef for a while longer, and then they said their goodbyes.

That night, Mufeedah slept soundly, feeling happy and contented. She knew that she had found her soulmate in Abdul Lateef, and she was grateful for his love and care. The gift he had sent her was just a token of his appreciation, but it meant the world to her. She knew that she would always treasure it, and the love they shared.

EPISODE 46

Samaira laid helplessly on the bed, nursing her health condition, she couldn't help but feel a sense of despair wash over her. Despite her best efforts, everything seemed to be proving abortive, and she was starting to lose hope. But amidst all the darkness, there were two shining lights that stood by her side, unwavering in their support and care - Mufeedah and Jemima.

Those two friends were the rock that Samaira clung to, the safe haven where she could be herself without fear of judgment or rejection. They ensured that she received her daily treatment, followed her to the hospital for doctor's appointments, and were always there to lend a listening ear. Samaira was deeply grateful for their support, and she didn't know what she would do without them.

One evening, as the sun began to set, Samaira managed to rise up from her bed, her eyes scanning the room until they landed on Mufeedah and Jemima. She looked into their eyes, and her voice was filled with emotion as she spoke. "Mufeedah, Jemima, I don't know what I would do without you both," she said, her words barely above a whisper. "You've been my everything, my reason for getting out of bed in the morning. I'm so grateful for your love and care."

Mufeedah's eyes welled up with tears as she squeezed Samaira's hands gently. "We're here for you, Samaira, and we'll always be here to support you," she said, her voice filled with conviction. "I pray that you'll recover from this sickness, that you'll be strong and healthy again. You're not alone in this, Samaira. We're in this together, and we'll get through it together."

Those kind words softened Samaira's heart, and she smiled gracefully, feeling a sense of peace wash over her. She knew that she was loved, that she was cared for, and that gave her the strength to keep going.

As the semester break commenced, every student had to go home for the holiday. Jemima and Mufeedah took Samaira to the motor park, where she got a bus that would drive her home. Afterwards, they also went to their various homes, each of them lost in their own thoughts.

Mufeedah, in particular, was surprised to notice a change in her father's behavior. He had become a responsible and caring father, calling her into the sitting room to talk to her about life issues and how she could conquer them. Mufeedah was stunned, she couldn't believe her father was such a caring one.

"Dad, I'm so grateful for the way you're talking to me now," Mufeedah said, her voice filled with emotion. "I feel like I can come to you with anything, and you'll be there to listen and offer advice. You're really trying, father, and I appreciate that."

Her father smiled, his eyes filled with warmth. "Mufeedah, I'm sorry it took me so long to realize the importance of being a good father," he said. "But I'm here now, and I want you to know that I'll always be here for you, no matter what. I love you, and I'm proud of the person you're becoming."

Mufeedah's heart swelled with love and gratitude for her father. "I love you too, Dad," she said, hugging him tightly. "Thank you for being such a wonderful father"

**********************************************

As Mufeedah and her father were having a heart-to-heart conversation, her mother, Mrs. Abdul Salam, entered the room with loads heavily weighed on her hands. Mufeedah immediately rose up to help her, taking some of the loads from her hands and giving her a warm smile.

"Assalamu alaikum, Mom," Mufeedah said, as she helped her mother put down the loads. "Welcome back. How was your day?"

Mrs. Abdul Salam smiled wearily, greeting her husband and daughter with a warm grin "Assalamu alaikum". "It was a tedious day, dear," she replied, sighing. "I had to go to the market and get some things done, but it was just so exhausting."

Mufeedah's father, Mr. Abdul Salam, showed compassion and concern for his wife, getting up from his seat to give her a warm hug. "Don't worry, my beloved wife" he said, holding her close. "You need to get some rest. You've been working too hard lately, and it's taking a toll on your health."

Mrs. Abdul Salam smiled, feeling grateful for her husband's concern. "I know.." she said. "I just need to get some things done, but it's just so hard sometimes."

Mufeedah watched the two of them, feeling happy to see her parents being so loving and caring towards each other. She remembered the days when her father was not as involved, when he was distant and cold. But now, he was a changed man, and it warmed her heart to see him being so affectionate and supportive towards her mother.

As her parents continued to talk and catch up, Mufeedah couldn't help but feel grateful for the positive changes that had taken place in their family. She knew that it wasn't always easy, but she was thankful for the love and support that they had for each other.

"I'll help you with dinner, Mom," Mufeedah said, breaking into the conversation. "Why don't you go and rest for a bit? I'll take care of everything."

Mrs. Abdul Salam smiled, feeling grateful for her daughter's help. "Thank you, dear," she said. "I appreciate it. I'll just go and lie down for a bit, and then I'll come and help you with dinner."

While Mrs. Abdul Salam was going in to rest, Mufeedah and her father continued to talk and bond, their relationship growing stronger with each passing day. Mufeedah felt happy to see her parents being so happy and in love, and she knew that it was all thanks to the positive changes that had taken place in their family.

"I'm glad to see you and Mom being so happy, Dad," Mufeedah said, smiling. "It's really nice to see you two being so loving and supportive towards each other."

Mr. Abdul Salam smiled, feeling grateful for his daughter's kind words. "I'm glad too, my daughter" he said. "I realize now that I wasn't always the best husband and father, but I'm trying to make up for it. I want to be there for your mother and for you, and I want to make sure that we're all happy and fulfilled."

Mufeedah nodded, feeling happy to hear her father's words. She knew that it wasn't always easy, but she was grateful for the effort that he was putting in to make their family stronger and more loving.
