With 2.5 years of writing experience, Fern Buszowski earned a Bronze Medal in the 2025 Illumination Book Awards for her debut book, Embrace Life, Embrace Hope: Cultivating Wholeness and Resilience through the Unexpected.

With nine years of writing experience and five published books, Jan Hemby has received two silver and two bronze medals from the Illumination Book Awards—recognition that reflects both her storytelling talent and the power of her message.

“The Illumination Christian Book Awards lived up to their mission statement: they shined a light on my books!” Jan shares. “I think I speak for most authors when I say that our biggest challenge—especially when we’re starting out—is making a splash in an already saturated book market.”

She adds, “Winning an award helps the book and the author get noticed. I’m certain that my reader base and my book sales have increased because of winning these awards. But, more importantly, I’ve grown as a writer.”

“Every time I win an award, I post it on my Instagram and Facebook. My publisher, Blue Ink Press, also announces it on their page and website. I also include this information in my bio on my website. Whenever I am introduced at an event where I’m speaking, I make sure they include those awards in my introduction!”

Her advice to authors considering the Illumination Awards?
“It is worth the entry fee, and don’t forget to write it off on your taxes! And think of it as being a little like The Oscars… If you receive an award, you can know that it was well-earned. If you don’t, it doesn’t mean that you didn’t submit a quality piece of literature. It just means that, that year, someone else’s was a little better. Don’t get discouraged, and keep writing!”
