"The Children and Youth Competition at this year’s Animafest featured an aspirational selection of short films that embolden young artists to dare and trust their imagination. Looking at the programmes for older children, specifically those aged 11-14 and 15+, audiences could see a focus on themes of overcoming self-doubt and loneliness, as well as the importance of unrestrained artistic creativity"
Sergiu Inizian and Arsène Rosenmann write (for our GoCritic review series) on the Children & Youth Competition at this year's Animafest Zagreb. See below:👇

🔰A girl, a park, and a 2D animation film full of memories. CalArts graduate, US-based indie animator Yingdan Lai crafted 'Little Dan', a 2D animation short that has a girl reminiscing about the little pleasures when being of a young age

"I obtained my BFA in an art school in China, where animation training focused a lot on creating within set topics, even for our thesis films. It felt a bit like swimming in a small, safe pool, but also limiting. After graduating, I wanted to experiment more and tell personal stories. With 'Little Dan', I was finally drawing from my own memories and creating in a way that felt honest."

It took a small-looking, almost of children material, French animation short to win this year's Annecy Cristal for a Short Film. 'The Night Boots' (Les bottes de la nuit) by animation filmmaker Pierre-Luc Granjon (production: Am Stram Gram) tells the story of a child meeting a strange 'beast' in the woods -instead of a terrifying adventure, the curious but solitary beast leads Elliot to a world of nighttime wonder and wander.

Our Zippy Frames Story

We started in 2011 with the aim to promote European and independent animation worldwide, a severely under-represented area in animation reporting and criticism. 6 years later and 3,000 articles in our Zippy Frames slate, we still feel there is the need to talk about animation; to review films; to cover in depth animation festivals; to host and hear the voice of people who do animation shorts ; to inform on professional opportunities and act as a liaison between providers and artists. We have certainly grown up a lot since our early start, but our mission remains the same.
