Michelle is coordinating the support centre at General Hospital, where she is the only mental health nurse on staff.

For patients who come to the centre having experienced family violence, and who need ongoing mental health support, Michelle works with safe houses who have counsellors to women and girls.

This is one way United Nations Population Fund Papua New Guinea, with support from Zonta International, are strengthening pathways to ensure women and girls experiencing violence can access the services they need to live a life free from violence.

Emergency room officer Espesia shares that before training with Zonta International and United Nations Population Fund Papua New Guinea, patients presenting with injuries consistent with gender-based violence would slip through the cracks.

Now, Espesia and her colleagues are better able to identify survivors and share with them pathways for support.

There are over 600 islands in Papua New Guinea.

Cynthia works with an NGO providing counselling for survivors of gender-based violence. For her and her colleagues, making sure no one is left behind means ensuring all women and girls - regardless of location - can receive the support they need.
