Brentwood Historical Society receives preservation grant

BRENTWOOD — The Brentwood Historical Society has been awarded a $3,250 matching grant from the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance to fund a condition assessment of the Keeneborough Grange/Waldron Store building, home to the society’s museum.

The town’s Select Board unanimously supported the match through building maintenance funds.

Historic preservation consultants Mae Williams and Drew Bedard toured the building on Nov. 10 to begin the assessment, which will help identify needs and potential eligibility for future grants. Their initial report is expected in January 2026.

Society leaders said the grant is an important step in caring for the historic Grange building and expressed gratitude for the alliance’s support and the town’s commitment.

Select Board Chair Mike Houghton to step down in March

STRATHAM — After nine years of service, Select Board Chair Mike Houghton announced he will not seek re-election when his current term ends in March.

Houghton, who over the years has served alongside fellow board members Bruno Federico, Joe Lovejoy, Bob O’Sullivan, Allison Knab, and Joe Anderson, reflected on his tenure with gratitude.

“It has been an honor for me to serve in this capacity, and I will look back with many fond memories,” he said.

He praised Stratham’s staff and community for their dedication and engagement, noting that residents’ involvement is what makes the town “special.”

As he returns to private life, Houghton said he remains “inspired by the past, committed to the future.”

‘Bears That Care’ returns to Whirlygigs Toy Shop in Exeter

EXETER — Whirlygigs Toy Shop has brought back its annual Bears That Care holiday tradition for 2025. Since 2013, owner Geoff Pendexter has donated two teddy bears to pediatric patients in Exeter Hospital’s emergency department for every bear sold in December.

The program has become a downtown Exeter holiday staple, drawing shoppers who come specifically to support the initiative.

Pendexter said he expects this year’s effort will push the total donations past 6,000 bears since the program began.

“It feels great for us, and it feels great for our customers… This is what it’s all about,” Pendexter said.

Celebrate Winter Solstice at Raynes Barn in Exeter

EXETER — Community members are invited to celebrate the shortest day of the year at a historic barn in town.

Hosted by the town's Conservation Commission on the Winter Solstice, Dec. 21, at Raynes Barn at 61 Newfields Road, the free event will offer a bonfire, hot cocoa and tea to those who join. The attendance of children and grandchildren is encouraged.

The 50-acre property, featuring the largest remaining barn in Exeter, was purchased by the town in 2002. It is a tangible link to Exeter's agricultural past, extending as far back as the 1600s. The Winter Solstice celebration will begin at 3:30 p.m.

"The celebration is a "great way to get the public together and promote the use of this beautiful public property," said Keith Whitehouse, a member of the Conservation Commission.

The property's use and management is overseen by the Raynes Farm Stewardship Committee, which is charged with advising the Conservation Commission. At the celebration, the historic barn will be open for viewing, offering an opportunity to see the ongoing restoration work by Bedard Preservation.

"We hope to see you there!" said Kristen Murphy, the town's conservation and sustainability planner.
