Reaching Beyond Bias She believes that everyone should have the tools and resources to share their stories - through music, media, and creative expression.

Shayna Marie is a thought-provoking writer, passionate poet, experienced facilitator, accidental historian and intentional curator whose voice is a raw, powerful call for narrative justice and community unity. She has managed several community-oriented events and projects in which creators, entrepreneurs, and community could come together to experience the rich cultural diversity our community has

to share. In 2023, she was honored to be selected for Grand Rapids Area Black Businesses’ “Young, Black & Gifted” award. Reaching Beyond Bias is a platform and organization committed to helping West Michigan residents understand the differences that drive us apart. We provide training opportunities, community engagement, intergroup dialogues, and multi-media resources and tools that enable the community to understand diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion issues. Focusing primarily on the theme of “narrative justice,” we believe that our stories are valuable and that our experiences should be shared with the world. Reaching Beyond Bias supports community media projects including documentary production and a podcast incubation ecosystem in partnership with Grand Rapids Media Initiative and Film Incubator.

Reaching Beyond Bias is a platform and organization committed to helping West Michigan residents understand the differences that drive us apart.

WOW!

West Michigan (Not So) Nice is a platform that I’ve been developing over the last several YEARS… that uplifts both academic research and the personal experiences & stories of those impacted by the cultural norms of West Michigan. This will officially roll out as a series of multimedia stories produced under Reaching Beyond Bias in collaboration with Grand Rapids Media Initiative and Film Incubator & many others! Plus educational workshops, community dialogues, events and much much more!

Reach out to me for questions / collaboration!

What a great conversation Dr. Rodney D. Brown and I had this morning about Narrative Justice and Storytelling as a vehicle for SYSTEMS CHANGE and advancing the Black Freedom Struggle (among other social struggles) - check it out on his page!

🗣 Say it LOUD! It’s Black history month where we celebrate our rich cultural heritage and triumphs of our people embedded in history. 🖤

This month challenge yourself to support Black owned businesses as much as possible, especially those on your backyard community. 🖤

🗣 Also, make sure to support black writers as many books are being placed in banned lists across the country. Check out We Are LIT bookstore (one of our favs).

Fun Fact: The celebration of Black history month is observed in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. 🖤
