Asgrauw’s strength lies in the solid foundation of the trio that has comprised of Vaal (guitar and vocals), Batr (drums), and Kaos (bass and vocals) since the band's 2012 debut.
Thanks to this solid foundation and the contributions of each band member, every album offers something new without making a radical musical shift. Their productivity is noteworthy, as they consistently release a full-length album every other year without compromising on quality.
Solips kicks off with the powerful "Confabulatie"; its striking horn section creates such an epic sound that it evokes the grandeur of “Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk”. This is just one of the many subtle details that make “Solips” a unique record, avoiding the trap of getting stuck in long and boring experiments in a desperate bid for innovation. Throughout, Asgrauw remains true to the great influences of the mighty 90s.
"Verblind" opens with wonderfully atmospheric guitar work and a delicate layer of keyboards, sweeping you away on a nostalgic journey back to the heyday of classic Scandinavian black metal.
"Chronisch" and "Nachtstorm" follow this same pattern but are far more aggressive in their ex*****on. The latter, in particular, is wonderfully energetic and a highlight of the album. In a live setting, this track is sure to have heads banging in a state of pure frenzy and ecstasy! Batr’s drumming is truly fabulous, rivaling the country’s finest percussionists such as Balgradon Xul (Infinity) and Fjildslach (Kjeld, Salacious Gods, Lugubre).
"Schaduwganger" is the first single from “Solips”, and the choice is certainly understandable. It features all the ingredients that make Asgrauw a strong band: frequent tempo changes, vocal diversity, and subtle keyboard work.
"Manipulatie" offers a moment to catch one's breath with a calm, exquisitely beautiful guitar and keyboard intro. However, this respite is short-lived, as the intensity ramps up significantly within a minute.
On "Atanna," Batr once again demonstrates his drumming versatility, while Vaal’s guitar and Kaos his bass also shine, all without resorting to overly complex progressive antics.
“Nadirflux” brings “Solips” to an excellent conclusion; with a total runtime of just under 40 minutes, many listeners will likely play the album again immediately to let themselves be transported to a bygone era, all without sounding dated or like mere imitators of their heroes.
Do not expect progressive black metal; Asgrauw has found a formula that works time and time again without making every album sound identical. “Solips” requires a few listens to uncover all the details, but it is precisely these details that give the album such high replay value. The vinyl and cassette editions will be released by Zwaertgevegt, while the Japanese label Hidden Marly Production is handling the CD release.

De kracht van Asgrauw ligt aan de solide basis van de drie éénheid die vanaf het debuut van de band in 2012 bestaat uit Vaal (gitaar en vocalen), Batr (drums), Kaos (bas en vocalen).
Door deze solide basis en de inbreng van ieder bandlid heeft elk album iets nieuws te bieden zonder muzikaal compleet het roer om te gooien. De productiviteit is noemenswaardig te noemen aangezien ze zonder uitzondering om het jaar een volledige plaat uitbrengen zonder aan kwaliteit in te boeten.
Solips trapt af met het straffe Confabulatie die met zijn opvallende blazerssectie dermate episch klinkt dat het beelden oproept van de epiek en grandeur van Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk. Dit is één van de vele kleine detail die Solips weer een unieke plaat maken zonder te verzanden in ellenlange experimenten om maar krampachtig vernieuwend te willen zijn. Asgrauw blijft te allen tijde trouw aan hun grote voorbeelden uit de machtige jaren 90.
Verblind opent met fantastisch sfeervol gitaarwerk met een dun laagje keyboards die je meevoeren in een nostalgische trip naar de hoogtij dagen van de Scandinavische black metal van weleer.
Chronisch en Nachtstorm volgen ditzelfde stramien maar zijn een stuk agressiever in hun uitvoering. Met name laatstgenoemde is heerlijk energiek en een hoogtepunt van de plaat. Tijdens concerten zal dit lied menig hoofd laten schudden in pure waanzin en extase! Het drumwerk van Batr is werkelijk fabuleus en kan zich meten met de grote slagwerkers des vaderlands zoals Balgradon Xul (Infinity) en Fjildslach (Kjeld, Salacious Gods, Lugubre).
Schaduwganger is de eerste single van Solips en deze keuze is zeker begrijpelijk. Alle ingrediënten die Asgrauw sterk maken zijn aanwezig. Veel tempowisselingen, vocale diversiteit en subtiel gebruik van keyboards.
Met Manipulatie kunnen we even op adem komen met een rustig en wonderschoon gitaar/keyboard intro. Deze rust is echter van korte duur want binnen een minuut wordt het gaspedaal weer flink ingetrapt.
Op Atanna mag Batr zijn diversiteit in drumwerk nog maar eens tonen en ook de gitaar van Vaal en basgitaar van Kaos schitteren zonder direct terug te vallen op moeilijk progressief gedoe.
Met Nadirflux wordt Solips op een uitstekende manier afgesloten en met zijn totale speelduur van nog geen 40 minuten zal menigeen de plaat direct weer opzetten om zich te laten meevoeren naar vervlogen tijden zonder oubollig of als een kopie te klinken van hun helden.
Verwacht geen progressieve black metal want Asgrauw heeft een recept te pakken die keer op keer werkt zonder dat elke plaat identiek klinkt. Solips heeft een aantal luisterbeurten nodig om alle details te ontdekken maar het zijn juist deze details die de herluisterwaarde groot maken. De vinyl en cassette zal worden uitgegeven door Zwaertgevegt waar het Japanse Hidden Marly Production de cd voor zijn rekening neemt.
