🎮 Trivia: Microsoft introduced the Xbox 360 S in 2010, which was thinner, quieter, and featured an integrated 250 GB hard drive with integrated WiFi. The year also saw the rise of cloud gaming with the assistance of OnLive, which brought to the fore the concept of playing blockbuster games directly from the cloud. High-definition imagery had gone mainstream at this stage, and it constituted the immersive world that existed at that time (as gleaned from Wikipedia).

You may not know that sea otters possess one of the most interesting mate behaviors among animals.

Most current research determines that sea otters have strong mate attachments and show cooperation fundamental to their survival—most critically within harsh, human-altered ecosystems. The sea charmers have been observed to float on their backs and swim hand-in-hand, not just a cute thing to see, but a necessity to keep pairs or groups of related otters from drifting apart.

Human disturbances proved to increase the energy expenditure by up to 7.2% and 5.4% by adult and female sea otters, respectively, according to a Journal of Wildlife Management study. Yet this does not prevent sea otters from recuperating and rebounding due to social relationships and cooperation, and proving the strength of unity and adaptability among animals.

For animal lovers, sea otters show us how much relationships and cooperation come into play—even among creatures living in the wild.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOODENG! 🎂

You know there’s a hippo that has won the world over while educating us on the remarkable anatomy of her own kind? Let me introduce you to Moodeng, the newest internet celebrity pygmy hippopotamus from Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo, whose cuteness has spread like wildfire (BBC News, 2024).

But Moodeng isn’t merely adorable—she provides an ideal illustration of hippos’ interesting adaptations. Check out the following astounding facts:
• Hippos possess large, barrel-shaped bodies, yet their bones are designed to achieve remarkable agility while underwater.
• Their ears, nostrils, and eyes are located on the top of their heads—assisting them to breathe, see, and hear while remaining largely submerged.
• Despite their size, hippos like Moodeng spend countless hours in water to stay cool, using their unique skin to secrete a sunblock-like substance—often called “blood sweat.” - Being a pygmy hippo, Moodeng distinguished herself by her petite build and more timid disposition than that of the large relatives.

Moodeng has become an international representative of her kind, working to put a spotlight on the peculiar anatomy and pressing conservation requirements of hippos globally (The New York Times, 2024).

What if there was Kryptonite on Earth? 🦸‍♂

All along, Superman's biggest weakness has been that shiny green rock—but do you know that there's a scientific equivalent right on our planet? As reported by a collaboration between chemists, there's actually a compound created from the noble gas Krypton and Oxygen, named Krypton Monoxide (KrO), that technically can be dubbed Kryptonite in our world. The problem, though, is that to create such, one needs to apply massive pressure and ends up obtaining an ultra-reactive and unstable compound—nothing you'd care to have within your fortress of solitude! (Source: Reddit/chemistry)

While KrO won’t be weakening any Kryptonians soon, it’s a fascinating reminder of how science often finds ways to mirror our favorite fiction.
