Chew is a space for celebration of pop culture, especially things dismisse

Chew is a space for celebration and commentary of all forms of popular culture, especially those things that are dismissed as lowbrow, trashy or juvenile by “weightier” publications. (We are still interested in other, more "serious" forms of culture, we just don't discriminate: it only generates hate.) Whether it’s the subtle message of a life-changing teen movie, the imagery in your favourite boy

band’s latest music video, or the recurring motifs in the eighth season of Keeping up With the Kardashians, Chew wants to explore it. We don’t believe in guilty pleasures, or enjoying things ironically, and we certainly don’t believe there’s such a thing as reading too much into it. Mainstream or minor, commercial or cancelled, we’re keen to sink our teeth into it. We're looking for writers to contribute to our next zine (and hopefully soon our online site too). If you have a piece of criticism or cultural analysis, a personal essay, an illustrative diagram, a review, or even a work of fiction that you think Chew would be interested in, please send it over to [email protected].

becoming a superstar pop hit. Dancing around with women who all love you as much as I do, who knew the words to every single song, was joyous. I’d forgotten your songs are short stories peppered with kisses, heartache and daydreams.

new -- a piece from daniel stein all about how fifth harmony and katy perry engage with dystopian futures, a must read over this lunch hour!

The last few years have shown that popular music with a political message is often slept on by mainstream music outlets and of course, by the Grammy’s. Kendrick Lamar’s vitally important messages about race on “To Pimp a Butterfly” were snubbed by the latter. Whilst, M.I.A’s album, “AIM” was ignored...

A gaunt figure makes his way to the centre of a stage, holding a sheaf of papers that dimly glimmer in the spotlight. He stands, shuffles his papers, and begins to read to a silent audience. This is a rare appearance at the National Poetry Day from Keaton Henson, an ‘acclaimed musician, writer and v...

"...you chose to work with Diplo and Metronomy, who moved you away from the glittering twilight of Girls Aloud and created a bratty and colourful soundscape for your lyrics. The surrounding visuals for the album are so well realised; it’s a dilapidated fairytale landscape contrasted with technicolour fashion and your pre-Raphaelite hair."

A Fan Letter to Nicola Roberts November 28, 2016 | Sara Sherwood Dear Nicola Roberts, I’m not going to pretend that I loved you from the beginning. When you first appeared on Popstars: The Rivals, with your choice clothing and hair ablaze, I didn’t really care for you. I was more hooked on Kimberley...

And Nothing Happens: The Fast and Slow of Gilmore Girls November 17, 2016 | Mala Sanghera-Warren In my secondary school years, on the good days when I managed to get home before 4 o clock, I would switch on to E4 for the daily episode of Gilmore Girls. It had a feeling of familiarity that existed no...

A Fan Letter to Peggy Guggenheim December 2, 2016 | Victoria Rodrigues O'Donnell Dear Peggy, I must admit from the outset of this letter that I hadn’t exactly heard of you until I watched a documentary entitled Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict by Lisa Vreeland. I knew of Vreeland’s work (she also direct...

Imagine: Eating Haggis with Justin Bieber December 5, 2016 | Sam Bradley Last night, my life changed, and it was all because of haggis. The haggis is a underrated foodstuff. It is not Instagrammable. It is not on-trend. It is not photogenic, though it is one of the few foods that actually looks bett...

The Lasting Impact of Girl Power November 25, 2016 | Kate Lunn-Pigula The Spice Girls exploded into being twenty years ago, proudly shouting ‘girl power!’ at everyone and everything.
