FILM FREAK FRIDAY

NOUVELLE VAGUE (2025)
I was fortunate enough to see Richard Linklater's loving tribute to French New Wave cinema at the Atlantic International Film Festival. It is shot in black and white and in 4:3 aspect ratio. The story of Jean-Luc Godard filming BREATHLESS on the streets of Paris. A marvel to behold! It will be released in November. Don't miss it!

SUPPORTING ACTOR SUNDAY

MARIA OUSPENSKAYA (1876-1949)
A remarkable figure — one of those character actors whose presence lingers long after the movie ends. Born in Russia, she studied under Konstantin Stanislavski and became a respected actress at the Moscow Art Theatre. When she emigrated to the U.S., she founded the School of Dramatic Art in New York, helping bring Stanislavski’s methods to American actors.
Though she was often cast in supporting roles, she had an aura that dominated the screen. She earned two Oscar nominations (DODSWORTH in 1936 and LOVE AFFAIR in 1939). To most movie fans, she’s unforgettable as the old Gypsy woman, Maleva, who warns Lon Chaney Jr. in THE WOLF MAN (1941)
Ouspenskaya is remembered both as a great teacher and a scene-stealing actress.

FILM FREAK FRIDAY

AT THE PLACE OF GHOSTS (Sk+te'kmujue'katik) --2025--
I was fortunate enough to see the independent film at the Atlantic International Film Festival in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The film stars Forrest Goodluck and Blake Alec Miranda two Mi'kmaq brothers who become haunted by a malevolent spirit and must reunite and journey into Skite’kmujuekati’k, the Place of Ghosts, to face their demons and heal. If you get the chance to see this film, made by First Nation Canadians, by all means do!
