ADAM WILLIAMS (1922-2006)
One of Hollywood's most memorable tough-guys. Before becoming an actor, he served with the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, flying transport missions in the China-Burma-India theater. He gave one of his finest performances in Fritz Lang's THE BIG HEAT, and appeared memorably in Alfred Hitchcock's NORTH BY NORTHWEST. Television audiences also remember him from THE TWLIGHT ZONE, where appeared in the haunting episode "The Hitch-Hiker." Though rarely cast in leading roles, Williams' intelligence and quiet menace made him one of the most distinctive character actors of the 1950s and 1960s. What do you remember his from?

One of the wildest and most perversely entertaining horror films of the 1930s. Bela Lugosi stars as a brilliant but sadistic surgeon obsessed with torture devices and Edgar Allan Poe's works, with Boris Karloff as the scarred criminal he blackmails into carrying out his murderous schemes. Lugosi gives one of his greatest performances, delighting in the character's madness with an intensity that's glorious to behold. The film's gruesome sa**sm helped provoke a backlash against horror movies, contributing to stricter censorship in both Britain and the United States and Universal's temporary retreat from the genre. Dark, bizarre, and unapologetically macabre, THE RAVEN remains one of the most unforgettable horror films of its era. Highly recommended.

This film marked Marlon Brando's film debut, and he immediately announced himself as a major new acting talent. Directed by Fred Zinnemann from a screenplay by Carl Foreman, the film tells the story of a war veteran paralyzed in combat as he struggles to rebuild his life after returning home. Brando spent weeks living in a veterans' hospital, studying the experiences of paraplegic patients to prepare for the role, and his naturalistic performance helped introduce Method acting to mainstream American cinema.
