One of the greatest films of the '80s. Writer/director John Sayles dramatizes the events of the Battle of Matewan, a 1920 coal miners' strike in West Virginia. Early work by the great Chris Cooper (his film debut), Mary McDonnell, Will Oldham, David Strathairn, Kevin Tighe, Gordon Clapp and James Earl Jones. Highly recommended.

CITIZEN KANE (1941)
Start the year off right with what I still consider to be one of the greatest American movies of all time. Fascinating, fun, at times hilarious, at times deeply moving. Written by Herman J. Mankiewicz and Orson Welles, directed magnificently by the then 25-year old Welles. With brilliant performances by Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore, Ray Collin, Everett Sloane and Welles. Essential viewing.
