HEADLINER: CATHI RAE

Cathi Rae is an award winning poet, spoken word artist and creative writing tutor. Much to her own surprise she has an MA and PhD in creative writing and poetry. She has headlined throughout the UK at poetry nights, literary events and festivals and is delighted to be making a return visit to Fire and Dust. She has been described as a 'spoken word icon' by Joelle Taylor and as writing poetry that is 'beautiful and necessary' by Lydia Towsey.

Her work focuses on telling stories of other people's lives and giving a voice to the voiceless and marginalised. She will be reading from her forthcoming collection - 'Poems of other people's lives' and talking about how we can use poetry as biography. There will probably a couple of poems about dogs too.

Our Story

Essential Info:

We accept submissions of Poetry, Fiction, Articles and Artwork – for specific issue themes deadlines and submission guidelines, please visit our website. Submissions must be sent via the submissions form on our website – work submitted to email addresses will be deleted. Please upload your written work as any kind of Word or .doc.x format (no PDFs). For submissions of photographs and artwork, please ensure your files are of sufficient image size and hi-res (300dpi minimum) – otherwise they will not be used. General Guidelines: Editors will aim to provide feedback wherever possible, but due to high volume of submissions this is not always possible. Feedback (if applicable) will be provided upon being updated with your submission’s status (Magazine Successful/Web Successful/Unsuccessful). We will email everyone, no exceptions. Due to the nature of the design and editing process a small amount of people may need to wait much longer than others due to their submission being ‘on Standby’. Theme: authors are encouraged to tackle the theme from a distinct and personal angle. Preference will be awarded to pieces that offer thoroughly unique and interesting perspective on the theme; submissions unrelated to the theme will almost always be unsuccessful. Pieces submitted to HCE and accepted will be published as edited. No dialogue will be entered into regarding editorial decisions, except with stylistic recommendations. All work accepted remains the intellectual property of the author. We ask that people do not engage in simultaneous submissions due to exclusivity issues with other magazines. Pieces may be submitted to other publications after being published in HCE, but we ask that authors inform the next publisher of the work’s appearence in HCE. Please note: All rights reserved, inclusion in HCE grants the publisher full rights to feature submitted work in future physical and electronic publications within the published submission guidelines.
