Lions Cricket Club Tour to Thailand – 5th Annual Series
The Lions Cricket Club, proudly representing the Malaysian Sikh cricketing community, recently concluded a highly successful and memorable tour to Pattaya, Thailand, for the 5th Annual Cricket Series. This meaningful event was graciously hosted by the Young Thai Sikh Association (YTSA) from May 17 to 18, 2025.
The series saw the Lions Cricket Club put up a strong performance. In the first match, the Lions emerged victorious, showcasing excellent teamwork and spirit. Unfortunately, the second match had to be called off due to heavy rain, resulting in both teams being declared joint champions. Despite the weather, the tour ended on a high note, reinforcing the strong bond of friendship between the two Sikh communities.
In a post-match interview, team captain Mervinder Singh expressed his pride in the squad, saying, “I’m super proud of this young and energetic team. They have performed well on and off the field. Our juniors have shown their dedication and love for this wonderful sport. Hopefully, this encourages more youths to take up this great sport. We are looking forward to hosting the Young Thai Sikh Association next year.”
This club contains an inspiring blend of experience and youth. Among the players were former Malaysian cricketers such as Mervinder Singh, Avtar Singh, Harinder Singh, and Shaunvinder Singh, as well as ex-State players who brought valuable domestic experience to the team. Current national players like Virandeep Singh and Pavandeep Singh added strength and skill, while rising state-level talents such as Naveen Singh (Kuala Lumpur), Gurneel Singh (Kuala Lumpur), Anandbir Singh (Kuala Lumpur), Gavyn Singh (Kuala Lumpur), and Rajveer Singh (Selangor) proudly represented the younger generation. Inderjit Kaur, who is the only Sikh woman cricketer in Malaysia currently representing the Kuala Lumpur Women’s Team, was also part of the squad. Their collective presence on the field highlighted the depth and promise of Sikh talent in Malaysian cricket.
Col (R) Manjit Singh Gill and Bhupinder Singh Gill played an instrumental role in the formation of the Lions Cricket Club. Their vision, dedication, and tireless efforts laid the foundation for what would become a proud symbol of unity and excellence within the Malaysian Sikh community. Their contribution remains an inspiration to the younger generation of cricketers.
Lions Cricket Club is the first registered Sikh Cricket Club in Malaysia. Over the years, it has grown into a symbol of cultural pride, unity, and sporting excellence. This tour and joint championship further solidify its role in promoting the Sikh community’s representation in cricket at both national and international levels.
Looking ahead, the Lions Cricket Club will be hosting this year’s edition of the prestigious Lall Singh Trophy, which is set to take place in September 2025. Further details and exact dates will be announced soon.
Lastly, the Lions Cricket Club would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the late Dato Harjit Singh, former President of the Johor Cricket Council, for his unwavering support of the Sikh cricketing community. His contributions and encouragement played a significant role in the growth of Sikh cricket in Malaysia. He will always be remembered and dearly missed.
The Lions Cricket Club remains committed to nurturing talent, fostering unity, and building lasting international friendships through the spirit of cricket
