Riding bikes is one of the things that keeps me sane and healthy in general, during the coronavirus pandemic all the more so. There is something about the feeling of bike wind rushing through your limbs that makes you feel like you're really going somewhere, really traveling, even when you're close to home. These are just a few of the local bike routes I recommend and outlines of actual rides I've been on recently. [ 1,387 more word ]

I went on a bike ride this weekend. The movement felt good in a week so intense. I've had a post about how cycling can feel good in these stressful times and the local bike rides that I've gone on to aid in my own mental health ready to go for awhile now. But it's going to have to wait. There's a movement going on right now. [ 1,152 more word ]

I am excited to show you some of the mini-travels and bike rides I've been doing during the pandemic but before I do I wanted to give you an even easier way to "travel" your neighborhood before it ends later this weekend. Since this year's Portland Rose Fest can't really happen you can stroll through various neighborhoods throughout town in an event they are calling " [ 644 more words ]

My (less than?) triumphant return to blogging

Things to do, local trips to take, and other small travels around the Portland, Oregon area during the coronavirus pandemic.

During a pandemic wherein no one is traveling and we're all terrified to move around, transmitting and catching a virus running rampant may seem like a strange time to pick up on a much-neglected travel blog. But, in a way, it's also the perfect time. Have I taken international trips since my last post? Long bike rides and hikes? You bet I have. [ 458 more words ]

I didn't do any year-end lists, or best of 2018, and really what good came of 2018 anyway? JK, I def had some fun times last year as hard as it was. Like starting to really write again, yay! But sorry, this post won't really be that. What it will be is something akin to those journalistic holiday fillers that nobody really reads but are actually pretty damn fun to write and I kinda miss a lot. [ 523 more words ]

This Fall I took a class with Ariel Gore, one of my all-time favorite writers. This Portland q***r mama twice over is known for her Hip Mama zine she started in the early 90s just after her daughter was born and several gut-wrenching and often rather magical realist/neo-fantastic novels. My favorite so far might be her most recent [ 564 more words ]

Super excited to start working with some old friends at a new publication, Into. This is my first piece for the Grindr backed LGBTQ publication addressing diversity in the outdoor community. It's been in the works since this Spring and I am so very excited to be a part of it. It is Fatventure Magazine, printed and digital magazine focusing on active lifestyles beyond the boundaries of weight-loss culture. Adventure culture, in general, is so en vogue and that's great and all but it's really been in the last year or two that marginalized people are starting to get to participate in a meaningful way. I think this is going to be a more reflective piece than my usual sort of "ride report" although I'll still embed the Ride with GPS/Strava routes I recorded and tell you some of the logistics. But basically, if you know me personally you know this has been a long hard year full of big overhauls. And as we move into Fall, so solidly felt here in Portland as the rain turned cold and the occasionally cloudy skies to flat gray, bike trips slow or stop. [ 1,461 more word ]

Just a quick note to any of my readers that have hung on after minimal posts for months: I got hacked yesterday. I will likely take this post down after a week or two but since email updates, rss and auto Twitter feeds went out I figured I should let you all know. So my apologies. I've done the most basic security updates but am looking into better protection measures. [ 35 more words ]

It's been awhile since I've written here. I finished my Camino storytelling and even though I had a couple more adventures in Barcelona and Southern Spain the wind had left my sails and adventures felt far away. I wrote a short thing for the LWT Summit I went to a couple months ago but 2018 has weighed hard on me and I've basically been an emotional wreck. [ 1,609 more word ]

This is primarily a travel and adventure blog, though it's also my personal space that I like to think I have freedom with. And though my long 3 month European trip has been over for several months now I've actually been doing quite a bit of travel in the last few weeks. Some was for work, some for pleasure, some a little bit of both. [ 716 more words ]

Lavacolla > Santiago > Tour of coast > Santiago October 4 - 5, 2017 For only the second time of our walking trip we embarked in the morning as a little crew.
