Several years ago when I was working on the episode about P*e Wee's Big Adventure, I was trying to track down anyone I could for interviews. One of the people I set my sights on was "Mario", the magic shop owner in the film.
Mario was played by a longtime character actor named Monte Landis. Monte was landing guest spots on tv shows and smaller roles in films going all the way back to 1955. He did a TON of stuff, but was never really "famous actor"...you know the type. If I had to guess, I'd bet Paul Reubens knew of him from some tv show he grew up watching and that had something to do with him ending up in the film.
He was born in the mid 20's so I knew he was up there in years when I was trying to reach out to him. Through my research, I learned that he had been involved with several different churches over the years. Very involved...to the point he was running ads in newspapers and other publications that advertised "classes" he was offering. For a while he was offering classes on the Torah and Kabbalah at Desert Synagogue in Palm Springs. I thought about how wild it would be to show up for a class like this and immediately recognize your teacher from some oddball tv show or film.
I found a phone number for him, and called him up. He had one of those voices that just sounded like an old-time Shakespearian stage actor. Very well-spoken and "theatrical".
Here's where it gets odd. I introduce myself and tell him what I do and why I'm calling. I explain that I'm working on this episode about P*e Wee's Big Adventure and would love to hear him speak about his experience working on the film.
Well, this bothered him. He kept saying things like "Why would anyone want to hear people speak about a movie that's over 30 years old?" and "Who on Earth would listen to this and why do you think I would want to speak about this?". He didn't seem to know what a podcast was, or he was just bothered by me and trying to be difficult. It actually got a bit rude and hostile, but I kept my cool with him and continued my pitch.
He finally agreed to speak with me, but not at that moment...he said it would have to happen later as he was very busy. I had to press him a little to get a date/time nailed down, but we agreed to a morning call a few days later and we ended our call on a calmer note.
The day comes for our interview and I call him. He picks up the phone, I greet him and remind him why I'm calling. He hangs up on me. No words, just "click".
I give it a minute, thinking perhaps there was a mistake, and I call him back. Nope. He clearly meant to hang up on me. This is where it gets pretty funny...
For some reason, my wife's name showed up on his caller ID, which had something to do with how our phone plan was set up. He starts yelling at me..."LEAVE ME ALONE, KRISTINE!!!!" "LEAVE ME ALONE, KRISTINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
So that's what I did. I left him alone and now anytime I watch the film, this wild little encounter pops into my head.
I don't fault Monte whatsoever. He didn't want to do an interview on this topic, no big deal. But rather than just a "sorry, I'm not interested", it turned into a pretty memorable few days for me.
I just learned that Monte passed away a few months back, in December 2024 at the age of 91.
Rest in peace, Monte.
