EDITORIAL | Rest to Rise: The Importance of Conducting a Wellness Break on Mental Well-being
โWe work harder to build a better future, yet the more we work, the less we live to enjoy it.โ This year, as the tasks begin to pile up, it is important to note that the real key to productivity is not working non-stop; but knowing when to take a break. Starting October 27, 2025, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara has put into action a much needed mid-school year Wellness Break to give students and teachers alike the chance to recover from their academic duties. This initiative emphasizes the importance of maintaining the balance between work and welfare as equally important as academic achievement; and highlighting the reason why having this wellness break is a crucial part of education.
Observing the implementation of a wellness break can improve your mental health greatly. Even just a few days off can have a great effect on your well-being. The constant pressure to study and meet deadlines contribute negatively to our mental state immensely, and it can cause you to lose motivation, develop depression, and even cause a decline in your cognitive functions.
As well as this, this week-long break can help boost a studentโs focus and creativity. When students step away from academic work, their minds can wander freely; helping spark new ideas and creativity that can also help them return to school with sharper concentration, improved critical thinking, and increased productivity. Working endlessly often leaves no time for students to dedicate towards their hobbies and interests, and no time to invest in their relationships. This often causes the loss of a spark that in turn, leads to their ambition dwindling.
With all this in mind, we must continue to prioritize the mental health of students and teachers alike. Working endlessly may seem like dedication, but without time to recover, both the mind and body eventually give in to exhaustion. Let us continue to remind the people around us that the goodness of our well-being is just as vital as academic achievement: and that true efficiency comes not just from our constant efforts, but from preserving a healthy balance of work and rest that allows us to perform at our best.
