Pivoting isn’t failure. It’s the path to success.
Earlier this year, Drizzle Weather almost collapsed. Our hero product, a first-of-its-kind weather app for junior and high school students, was gaining traction. Kids loved it. School districts were interested. We were ready to launch.
Then came a death blow....
NJ Governor Phil Murphy announced a classroom cell phone ban.
NY Governor Kathy Hochul followed with her own push.
Overnight, our app business model was gone. I thought extreme weather doesn’t wait, but if kids can’t use their phones in class, neither could we.
After a week of sulking, I asked myself: How else can we bring weather and climate to life?
The answer: Edible Weather, an interactive food experience that explains science in a way kids and teachers never forget. We piloted in Brooklyn and Queens. Both were a hit. Since then, thousands of kids have learned weather through food.
By year’s end, my goal is to have 20 schools and after-school programs adopt Edible Weather. I'm also trying to figure out how to go directly to consumer.
Sometimes your biggest setback is really a setup—for something even bigger (and yummier).
Take the leap. Pivot boldly. Success will follow.
